UVic and Eduroam

The UVic and eduroam wireless networks use WPA2-Enterprise security, which requires both a username and a password.

Supported Devices:

  • Computers and smart phones supporting WPA2-Enterprise.
  • Supported operating systems include Windows 8.1/10, Mac OS X, Linux, Android, iOS/iPadOS

Note: Devices which support WPA2-Enterprise should connect to UVic or eduroam, as UVic-BYOD is meant for media or consumer-grade home wireless devices. Devices which support WPA2-Enterprise and are detected on UVic-BYOD may be disconnected.

 

UVIC-BYOD

UVic-BYOD (‘bring-your own device’) uses WPA2-PSK security, which requires a password only. Home consumer wireless devices not supporting WPA2-Enterprise will connect to the UVic-BYOD network.

Students self-register their BYOD devices via this web portal, only accessible from campus.

Supported Devices:

  • Game consoles – Xbox 360 & One, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Switch, 3DS
  • Android devices* – TV boxes
  • Amazon FireTV*/Echo*
  • Roku
  • Smart TVs
  • Apple TV*

*Casting, mirroring or AirPlay is currently not functional due to security and privacy issues.

 Unsupported Devices:

  • Wireless Routers: Personal wireless routers, which includes Airport Time Capsules, are not permitted as they create interference, which makes the wireless networks around it unusable. Using such devices are against security policy IM7200. Unauthorized wireless routers can and will be disabled by Network Services at their sole discretion.
  • Google ChromeCast and Google Home/Home Mini: For security reasons, home devices of this type are not currently supported on the UVic wireless networks. Although some consumer-grade media devices, such as the ChromeCast and Apple TV, support WPA2-PSK, the casting function exposes these devices to all other wireless clients, potentially leading to unauthorized content sharing, so casting is currently not possible.
  • Wireless Printers: For security reasons, wireless printers are not currently supported on the UVic wireless networks. Although most wireless printers support WPA2-PSK, they lack security and would be exposed to all other wireless clients, potentially leading to unauthorized printing. Printers should be connected to user devices via USB or Bluetooth. To avoid causing interference to the UVic wireless networks around the printer, wireless broadcasting (Wifi-Direct) must be disabled.
  • Home Automation (including Smart Bulbs): Smart bulbs are not supported due to the permissions required to allow control of these bulbs. Most bulbs do not have adequate security to limit access, and opening up this access will result in the devices being accessible by unauthorized users on campus. It is recommended to use Bluetooth-capable devices where possible, avoiding wifi usage.

UVicStart

UVicStart is for guest wireless devices, and is an unsecured network. Wireless devices which can handle webpages are supported. Users require email access to complete their connection.
