Awards and funding

The university has numerous awards for graduate and undergraduate students. Certain awards are open only to Social Work students while others are more general in nature and are available to students in our Social Work programs. Some require an application whereas others (scholarships) are awarded based on academic achievement.

  • Scholarships and Bursaries for Undergraduate and Graduate Social Work Students. There are three categories:
    • Bursaries require an application on the part of the student and financial need is the primary criteria upon which decisions are made. The deadlines for general bursary applications are October 15th for the Fall/Spring Session and June 1st for the Summer Session each year.
    • Entrance scholarships need no application and are given based on the criteria set by the donor.
    • In-course scholarships are those given to students based on various criteria set out by the donor. The deadline for in-course scholarships is May 31, unless stated otherwise.
  • Bursaries open to all UVic students
    • There are an array of bursaries open to students with criteria set by donors.  They vary from those for mature students, for indigenous students, for continuing students and so on.  The primary consideration for awarding these is financial need. Only one application per session is necessary to be considered for all the bursaries.
  • Scholarships for students with a disability
    • Students with a disability, including those with a reduced course load are eligible to be considered for all scholarships.  Students must have documentation of the disability filed with the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL)
  • Former Youth in Care
    • If you are a UVic student who was formerly in care in BC, you may be eligible for the BC Provincial Tuition Waiver Program and/or the UVic Youth in Care Tuition Award.
  • Jamie Cassels Undergraduate Research Awards (JCURA)
    • JCURA was established in 2009-2010 by the Vice-President Academic and Provost. The goal of this award is to encourage undergraduates to pursue innovative and original research to enhance their learning while at the University of Victoria and to provide a valuable preparatory experience towards graduate studies or a research related career.
  • External Awards
    • There are a large number of awards external to UVic that you might want to consider.
  • Elizabeth Hill Chi-Meegwetch fund
    • The School of Social Work maintains a modest fund in honor of Elizabeth Hill. The fund is used to assist Indigenous BSW students with their learning journey. The bursary amount changes each year and may be distributed to more than one applicant.
