New HSD Indigenous student centre
The Ring
Shauna Underwood remembers all too well what it was like to be an Indigenous student at UVic—trying to do well in her studies while also being a single parent of three children and having cultural responsibilities in her community. “I felt like I didn’t have anyone to go to. There were individual instructors who were great, but they are not always on campus or available,” said Underwood, now the Indigenous advisor at the newly opened Indigenous Student Support Centre (ISSC) in the Faculty of Human and Social Development.

Thanks to generous donations from individuals and well-attended campus events, the final fundraising tally for the 2013 UVic United Way campaign reached a thermometer-topping $254,445. In 2012, the UVic campaign raised $250,647. The 2013 campaign also welcomed 82 new donors.
United Way campaign update
The Ring
The season of giving is upon us, and there is still time to contribute to the UVic United Way campaign. As of Nov. 29, the campaign had raised $212,150—approximately 80 per cent of the campaign target—from pledges and fundraising at campus events such as the Hearts and Hands Craft Fair, Bug Push and UVic Libraries Book Sale.
United Way campaign update
The Ring
The 2013 UVic United Way campaign kicked off on Oct. 7 with a popcorn social at the Welcome Centre. UVic staff from across campus stopped by to drop off pledge forms and meet representatives from United Way Greater Victoria.
Be an agent of change for United Way
The Ring
Are you ready to be an agent of change? United Way Greater Victoria is once again counting on the support of UVic staff, faculty and students to help meet its 2013 fundraising goal of $6 million. Follow your nose to the UVic campaign kick-off on Monday, Oct. 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the University Centre. Everyone is invited to drop in to the Welcome Centre to enjoy popcorn snacks and talk to representatives from United Way and UVic’s campaign steering committee.
