A passport stamped "experience"
The Ring
Electrical engineering grad Sarah Allan explored her personal and professional interests at home and abroad while at UVic—thanks in large part to the co-op program. “Taking part in the co-op program allowed me to explore many of my personal interests,” she says. “It also allowed me to gain industry knowledge that wouldn’t have possible in a traditional degree program.”

The Ring
Four new academic leaders take up their posts at UVic this summer with the appointments of Dr. Patricia Marck as dean of human and social development, Dr. Susan Lewis as acting dean of fine arts, Dr. Cedric Littlewood as new acting dean of humanities and Dr. Kathryn Gillis as acting dean of science.
Deeper understanding of the universe
The Ring
CERN Director General Dr. Rolf Heuer to give inaugural Alan Astbury Public Lecture on April 27. The world’s most powerful particle accelerator came back online this month after a two-year hiatus. Already credited with the discovery of the Higgs boson (or “God particle”), the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the CERN facility at Geneva, Switzerland, holds the key to discovering the origin of mass, the nature of dark matter, and much more. As excitement is re-ignited about the LHC, UVic welcomes Dr. Rolf Heuer, Director General of CERN, to the campus for a public talk on the collider’s potential.
MoEML - Map of Early Modern London
The Ring
You could walk across London of the 1500s in about 20 minutes. And now, thanks to the survival of a 450-year-old woodcut map, Shakespeare’s world can also "open up to us like a Google map,” says Dr. Janelle Jenstad (English), project director of UVic’s constantly evolving Map of Early Modern London (MoEML).
New research on same-sex marriage
The Ring
The Supreme Court of the United States is set to hear arguments on April 28 in a landmark case on the constitutionality of state bans on same-sex marriage. One month ahead of the ruling, timely new research by UVic historian Dr. Rachel Hope Cleves is affording critical insights and historical context for the cresting debate on civil rights and full equality of marriage in the US, where same-sex marriage is already legal in nearly 40 states.
2015 Provost’s Engaged Scholars
The Ring
Dr. Bonnie Leadbeater (psychology) and Dr. Anne Marshall (education) have been named the 2015 recipients of the Provost’s Engaged Scholar Award.
40th anniversary of UVic Law
The Ring
2015 is a banner year for UVic Law: its 40th anniversary. We often think of UVic Law as a young faculty, but it has now delivered four decades of first-class legal education. On March 6 and 7, the faculty will celebrate this milestone with a series of events for alumni, faculty, students and friends. It is a time to take stock. What kind of law school is UVic? What distinctive contributions has it made to Canadian legal education over the last 40 years? Or, to put the question with a little more edge: Would British Columbia, would Canada, be any different if UVic Law had not been founded?
Valerie King named ACM Fellow
The Ring
Dr. Valerie King (computer science) has been named a 2014 ACM Fellow by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) for her contributions to randomized algorithms, especially dynamic graph algorithms and fault tolerant distributed computing. Her work in randomized algorithms allows networked computers, working together to solve a problem, to recognize invading malware so that they can ignore the information sent by bad computers and continue to coordinate with the good ones. The association recognizes ACM members’ creativity and commitment to the study of computer science.
Kuehne appointed VP Academic
The Ring
The University of Victoria's Board of Governors announced today that Dr. Valerie Kuehne, an exceptional academic and institutional leader and a dedicated member of the UVic community for 25 years, is the university's new Vice-President Academic and Provost, effective July 1, 2015 for a five-year term. She is currently acting in that capacity.
Theatre education symposium
The Ring
Canadian drama instructors gather at UVic to make sure they're giving students far more than just their next few lines. If you’ve ever seen actors at work—on stage, on screen, on the street or on television—you’ve seen the results of the kind of pedagogy happening daily in the Department of Theatre. But now a first-of-its-kind national symposium co-organized by theatre professor Conrad Alexandrowicz is questioning and examining traditional acting methods, as it addresses what’s been described as “the crisis of actor training in Canada.”

Victoria Film Festival 2015
The Ring
After 25 years of queer activism, writing professor and filmmaker Maureen Bradley is still changing the world—she’s just having more fun doing it now, thanks to her debut feature film, Two 4 One. Billed as the first transgendered romantic comedy, Two 4 One offers a bittersweet look at a couple in an unimaginable predicament: after an ill-advised one-night stand, Miriam and Adam both wind up pregnant.

Makenzie Zouboules, third-year UVic honours political science and writing co-op student, is something of a celebrity in her hometown of Yellowknife, NWT. Last month, along with FOXY co-founders Candice Lys and Nancy MacNeill, Zouboules accepted a $1-million Arctic Inspiration Prize for their work with northern youth. Originally part of Lys’ PhD dissertation on public health promotion, FOXY (Fostering Open eXpression among Youth) is a participatory research project aimed at talking with young people about sexual health, sexuality and relationships across the three northern Canadian territories.
