Wildfire smoke in the area

Environment Canada issued a Smoky Skies Bulletin for BC, including Greater Victoria, due to wildfire smoke in the region. At present, the air quality health index (AQHI) is at 2, indicating a low risk for health complications; however, there is a possibility of the index increasing to 7 (high risk), depending on shifting local conditions.

If the index increases to 7 or higher, measures should be taken to modify strenuous outdoor activity for members of the UVic community who may have respiratory health conditions, or for anyone who is experiencing respiratory symptoms due to the smoke. The same guidance applies for strenuous outdoor activities for children/youth involved in recreational or youth programs at UVic. Vikes Camps will modify their outdoor activities, if required.

We are closely monitoring the situation and will update the community should smoke conditions worsen. More information about air quality and prevention measures can be found on UVic's Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (OHSE) site.
