Degree type:

BA (preferably in Asian Studies or a related field)

Minimum standing:

B+ (6.0 GPA) average in last two years of study

Ideally, students will have advanced ability in an Asian language (sufficient to conduct research in that language), relevant to their area of study.

International students whose native language is not English must also include results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language or equivalent, with a minimum score of 575 or equivalent.

How to apply

Follow the step-by-step online application instructions on the Faculty of Graduate Studies website. All completed applications and supporting documents must be submitted online directly to the Graduate Admissions & Records Office.

The online application includes the following materials:

  1. Application for admission to graduate studies
  2. Two letters of reference from academic referees
  3. Application fee
  4. Official transcripts of all post-secondary studies
  5. TOEFL 90 (internet based), IELTS 6.5 or MET 64, if required
  6. One copy of a sample of the applicant's written work, up to a maximum of 10 pages (e.g., a third or fourth-year university paper)
  7. A statement of intent (maximum one page)

This statement should include:

  • your background and reasons for wanting to pursue a graduate degree in our program
  • your proposed areas of study and as much detail as possible about your particular research interests
  • an assessment of your language abilities (including both English and your Asian-language ability)
  • possible supervisor(s) and proposed study stream
  • whether you wish to be considered for department teaching assistantships and research assistantships
  • whether you wish to be considered for department fellowships and scholarships
