Faculty of Health coming to UVic

March 28, 2024

Dear students,

I am thrilled to share that UVic is establishing a Faculty of Health, which will become operational on May 1, 2025. This decision follows considerable consultations, including a campus-wide survey that over 1,000 students responded to in September.

The Faculty of Health will pave the way for new experiential and training opportunities for students in a research-enriched learning environment, including paid co-op placements. We also expect to respond to pressing local and global health challenges in new ways—through our research, teaching and training strengths—and by integrating Indigenous ways of knowing and scholarship into future courses and curriculum related to health and wellness.

Initially, the Faculty of Health will consist of these existing schools at UVic (there may be additional units in the future as we are still actively consulting):

  • Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education
  • Health Information Science
  • Medical Sciences
  • Nursing
  • Public Health and Social Policy
  • Social Work

If you are taking a program in one of these schools, your experience will continue to be high-quality, research-enriched programming, delivered by the professors you have come to know. You will not see any material changes in the near future, although the faculty listed on your degree parchment might change, depending on when you graduate. This is true as well for students in the School of Child and Youth Care (which is moving to the Faculty of Education), School of Indigenous Governance (moving to the Faculty of Social Sciences) and School of Public Administration (moving to the Faculty of Social Sciences). This is because UVic will be moving all schools from the Faculty of Human and Social Development to other faculties.

There is additional information and FAQs on our web page: uvic.ca/health-faculty. You are also welcome to send questions to healthfaculty@uvic.ca

As valued members of our campus community, thank you for being a part of this historic university initiative. Thank you also to our student Senators and particularly to the two students who served on the ad-hoc Senate Committee on Academic Health Programming and helped move this initiative forward.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Croft, PhD
