Senate votes unanimously on the Faculty of Health

March 8, 2024

I’m thrilled to share that on March 1, Senate voted unanimously to move the ad-hoc Senate Committee on Academic Health Programming’s omnibus motion to establish a Faculty of Health. We have updated our project web page to reflect this important milestone. The omnibus motion will now proceed to the March 26 meeting of the Board of Governors for final approval.

Should the Board approve, the Faculty of Health would be established on May 1, 2024 but would not become operational until the following year. The following schools are confirmed to be part of the Faculty of Health for May 1, 2025:

  • Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education
  • Health Information Science
  • Medical Sciences
  • Nursing
  • Public Health and Social Policy
  • Social Work

The Division of Medical Sciences would become a school, and the Faculty of Human and Social Development (HSD) would be disestablished. Three HSD schools not bound for the Faculty of Health will migrate to other faculties, also on May 1, 2025:

  • Child and Youth Care, Faculty of Education
  • Indigenous Governance, Faculty of Social Sciences
  • Public Administration, Faculty of Social Sciences

There continues to be an incredible amount of support for this transformative initiative, and a positive vote by the Board would kick off phase 2 of the project. We will update our campus community on the outcome and next steps following the March 26 meeting of the Board.

Sincerely,

Helga Hallgrímsdóttir, PhD
