Conference travel & research participant funding

Note: students can apply only once a year (between April 1 and March 31) for either the conference travel funds or research participant funds.

Conference travel

Criteria for eligible applicants:

  • a registered graduate student (ANTH or ANTH INTD) in the term in which you plan to travel
  • presenting a paper or poster in person
  • must apply for Faculty of Graduate Studies travel/conference funding (if eligible)
  • must apply for CUPE conference funding (if eligible)
    • copy anthtwo@uvic.ca on the application
    • apply early
    • you will have 30 days from the end of the travel to provide original receipts and form for reimbursement. If you received funding from the ANTH department, submit receipts to the graduate assistant. They will take care of the paperwork for ANTH and CUPE together.
  • if anything changes and you are no longer planning to attend a conference, please notify the office so that we may reallocate the funds

Priority to students:

  • in first 2 years of MA program or first 4 years of PhD
  • presenting at a major professional conference (e.g. SAA, AAA, CASCA, APA)
  • have not previously received ANTH travel funding
  • do not have access to funding through a fellowship or supervisor’s grant funds

Travel amounts

The travel grant budget is limited and fluctuates yearly. Grants to individual students are in the range of $100-$400, depending upon conference location.

  • up to $400 for travel outside of Canada
  • up to $300 for travel within Canada, outside of BC
  • up to $200 for travel within BC, off the island
  • up to $100 for travel outside of Victoria, on the island

Submit your application at least 1 month before travel date.

Research participant funds

Criteria for eligible applicants:

  • a registered graduate student (ANTH or ANTH INTD)
  • must provide a tentative budget explaining how many research participants will receive honorarium or stipend with indication of how much each participant will be paid and for which methodological purpose (interview, group conversation, survey, etc).
    • along with the tentative budget, the student must provide a tentative calendar for the data collection process
    • we encourage students to pay their research participants a fair honorarium ($20/hr)
    • transportation and babysitting may also be added to the budget if applicable
  • must indicate the UVic Research Ethics protocol number under which the student will conduct their fieldwork
  • supervisor must approve the tentative budget (we will forward your application to them for approval)
  • within 1 month after completing the data collection process, students must submit original receipts of honorarium or stipends paid with signature of research participants and/or e-transfer receipts to prove payment

Priority to students who:

  • are planning or in the process of conducting fieldwork in the next 6 months for MA or PhD project
  • have not previously received ANTH research participant funding
  • do not have access to funding through a fellowship or supervisor’s grant funds (if applicable)

Research participant amounts

The research participant funding budget is limited and fluctuates yearly. Grants to individual students are in the range of $100-$400, depending on the research methodology adopted and the number of research participants.
