Ocean Sciences Programs

OSP

We offer three different programs with an emphasis on Ocean Sciences.

  1. The Minor in Ocean Sciences can be taken alongside any General, Major, or Honours program at UVic and is intended to be accessible to any undergraduate with an interest in science. Prerequisites are limited to first-year general science courses (100-level Math, Physics, and Chemistry), as well as the two introductory Earth and Ocean Sciences courses (EOS 110 and 120).

  2. The Combined Major (or Honours) in Chemistry and Ocean Sciences gives students a fundamental grounding in the field of chemistry alongside specialized courses in ocean sciences.  The program is identical to the Chemistry Major in the first two years, allowing easy entry at the 3rd year level. This new program will be available as of the January 2020 calendar.

  3. The Combined Major (or Honours) in Physics and Ocean-Atmosphere Sciences gives students a fundamental grounding in the field of physics alongside specialized courses in ocean and atmospheric sciences. The program is identical to the Physics Major in the first two years, allowing easy entry at the 3rd year level. This new program will be available as of the May 2020 calendar.

Join us to investigate biological, chemical, geological, and physical oceanography. Experience hands-on learning with field work aboard the MSV John Strickland, at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre, and in extensive labs. Study the waters of Saanich Inlet and the west coast of Vancouver Island, learning practical analytical techniques and the theory to interpret your results.

Students declare any of these minor, major, or honours programs in ocean sciences in the same way as other programs, by submitting a program declaration or change form in My Page. Students entering or considering these programs are also highly encouraged to contact the Ocean Sciences Mentor. We will work with you to ensure your intended program fits your academic plans and to offer advice on future careers or graduate school.
