Annette Alber’s PhD research (supervised by Dr. Juergen Ehlting and D. Werck, U Strasbourg) on the evolution of coumaroyl conjugate 3-hydroxylases was published in The Plant Journal. Specialization of the phenylpropanoid pathway towards lignin biosynthesis /wood formation and defensive phenolics happened multiple times in flowering plants, while ferns and lycopods appear to make lignin through distinct pathways. This sheds new lights on the evolution of lignin, a defining feature of all vascular plants.
