Achievement Awards recognize undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the pursuit of excellence in their endeavours. Fine arts, athletics, and other areas where individual expression becomes public are recognized through these awards. Recipients must have demonstrated financial need and a minimum 3.5 sessional grade point average for students continuing at or transferring to UVic, or a 70% admission average for students commencing postsecondary studies for the first time. Departments will distribute application forms to prospective students, who will complete and return them to the Office of the Dean of Fine Arts.

Bursaries

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Alumni Association Visual Arts Graduate Bursary*

One or more bursaries are made to graduate students in the Department of Visual Arts. Selection of the recipient(s) will be made by Student Financial Aid Services upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.

Douglas Gibb Morton Memorial Bursary*

Frances Trapp (Brown) Cameron Memorial Bursary in Visual Arts*

A bursary is awarded to a student in the Visual Arts program. Preference will be given to a graduate of Victoria High School.

Patricia Beer Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to a student or students entering or returning to an undergraduate or graduate program in Visual Arts. In the case of a graduate award, selection will be made by the Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.

Visual Arts Auction Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students entering or continuing in a Visual Arts program. Preference will be given to students of First Nations heritage for at least one of every four bursary assignments.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Emily Apinis-Grundstein Scholarship*

Graduate of 1976 Visual Arts Scholarship

Janet Moerman Memorial Scholarship

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering, transferring or continuing in either the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies or the Department of Art History and Visual Studies.

Preference will be given to mature students (23 years and older). For students in Pacific and Asian Studies, further preference will be given to students whose focus of study is Japan.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of either the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies or the Department of Art History and Visual Studies. Awarding of the scholarships will alternate years between the two Departments.

JTS Scholarship*

One scholarship, of at least $1,000, is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student entering or continuing in each of the following Departments: Visual Arts, the School of Music and Theatre.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts, the School of Music and the Department of Theatre.

Takao Tanabe Undergraduate Award in Visual Arts

One award of at least $2,500 will be given to an undergraduate student entering third or fourth year in the Department of Visual Arts whose focus is on painting.  Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.

  • require an online application via Online tools submitted between February 15 - April 30, unless otherwise stated in the Terms of Awards.
  • are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Jean Tutcho Indigenous Undergraduate Award in Visual Arts*

One or more awards are given to entering, continuing or transferring Indigenous undergraduate students in the Department of Visual Arts. Preference will be given to students in the following order:

  1. students who have experience working with wood material in an Indigenous context (for example carving, construction or expanded material examinations)
  2. students from Northwest Territories
  3. entering students
Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.

Alan Steven John Awards in Visual Arts

Value: $9,000 | Number: 3

Three awards of $9,000 each are given to undergraduate students entering or transferring into second or third year in the Department of Visual Arts with a minimum GPA of 4.0/9.0 and who:
-have demonstrated financial need
-are Canadian citizens, and
-graduated from high school in Canada BC.

Preference is for students with an interest in painting or sculpture and who are under 30 years of age when entering second or third year and a further preference is for at least one recipient to be a Canadian-born Indigenous student.
Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.

To be automatically renewed a student must have completed a total of 12 or more academic units in any two terms of study between May and April and maintained a grade point average of 4.0/9.0 or higher on the best 12.0 units. The scholarship is automatically renewed for each year of a student's full time study until the completion of a first degree or for a maximum of two years, whichever is the shorter period. A student whose grade point average falls below 4.0/9.0 may file a written appeal with the Senate Committee on Awards to seek special consideration for renewal of the award.

Students registered in a co-op or work experience work-term will automatically be renewed when they next complete 12.0 or more academic units in two terms, provided they have a grade point average of 4.0/9.0 or higher in the two terms. Any student who takes neither a co-op, work experience work-term, nor 80% of a full course load for more than one term may forfeit their award.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Asper Scholarship in Film and Video Arts*

A scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student in film and/or video arts in the Department of Visual Arts.

  • In the case of an undergraduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.
  • In the case of a graduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.

Audrey St. Denys and M.E. Johnson Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in Faculty of Fine Arts.

  • In the case of an undergraduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.
  • In the case of a graduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.

Avis Rasmussen Award*

One or more awards are given to mature graduate students (students who have been out of school for four years) in the Department of Visual Arts who focus on painting, drawing or print-making. For graduate students, preference is for entering students. If there are no graduate students who are eligible then one or more awards are given to undergraduate students aged 23 or over in the Department of Visual Arts with a focus on painting, drawing or print-making. 

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by either the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee or the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.

Dana Hlavac-Winsor Scholarship*

John Wyatt Price Book Prize in Photography*

A book prize is awarded to a student majoring in Visual Arts with an emphasis in photography. Preference will be given to a student who has demonstrated an interest in portraiture.

JTS Scholarship*

One scholarship, of at least $1,000, is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student entering or continuing in each of the following Departments: Visual Arts, the School of Music and Theatre.

Kathleen G. Collis Art Therapy Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate or graduate students in the Faculty of Fine Arts with:

  1. an interest in phenomenological approaches
  2. other forms of community-engaged creative activity that contributes to the field of art therapy.

Preference will be given to a student from the Department of Visual Arts. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Dean of Fine Arts upon the recommendation from the individual departments.

Pat Martin Bates Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded by the Canadian Federation of University Women Victoria to the most outstanding woman student completing the third year of a program in Visual Arts.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Audain Travel Award

Value: $7,500 | Number: 1

One award of $7,500 will be given to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in the Department of Visual Arts to enhance the student learning experience through travel or project/research costs in support of broadening the student’s knowledge of historical and contemporary art. This activity may include, but not be limited to travel, accommodation, admission fees to museums, galleries, etc., and/or participation in exhibitions, performances, workshops or presentations. Preference is given to students who are using the fund for travel.

Applications must include a brief description of their reason for travel (50 word max), a letter of endorsement from a faculty member, a budget detailing the cost of the travel and/or research project, and a resume of the student’s work.

Approval of the recipient will be made by either the Senate Committee on Awards or the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts. Application forms are available from the Department of Visual Arts office and must be submitted by July 31.

Elizabeth (Betty) Valentine Prangnell Scholarship*

A scholarship will be awarded to two academically outstanding undergraduate Indigenous students of different genders majoring in Visual Arts. Preference will be given to students with an interest in Indigenous visual art. If there is only one eligible undergraduate student, then a graduate student of a different gender than the undergraduate student recipient may receive the scholarship. If there are not two eligible undergraduate students, then two graduate students may receive the scholarship.

Approval of the recipients will be made by either the Senate Committee on Awards or the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Visual Arts department.
