One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the School of Social Work who are permanent residents of BC and intend to pursue a career in either corrections or child welfare in BC. Preference is for students who are parents.

One or more bursaries will be awarded to students in the Distance Education Bachelor of Social Work Program. The intent of the bursaries is to assist students who encounter severe financial difficulties in returning to full or part-time studies. The bursaries are awarded in memory of Arthur C. (Art) Abrahamson who, as a consultant to the School of Social Work in its early years, was a source of immense help to students and faculty.

One or more bursaries are awarded offered to undergraduate or graduate students in the School of Social Work, who are in or are planning a career in child welfare practice, with preference for those who want to work in northern British Columbia. Part-time students are eligible (undergraduate students registered in a minimum of 6.0 units for credit in two terms and graduate students registered in a minimum of 1.5 units per term).

One undergraduate bursary and one graduate bursary are awarded to single parents registered in degree programs in Social Work. Undergraduate students must be registered in a minimum of 9.0 units of study and graduate students must be registered with the Faculty of Graduate Studies on a full time basis for winter session. If there is no qualifying graduate student in a particular year, the second award will be given to a qualifying Undergraduate student.

A bursary is awarded to a student in the School of Social Work who has completed third year, is preceeding to fourth year and whose need for financial aid is such that the usual sources of assistance are not sufficient.  Preference will be given to students with family responsibilities and whose permanent residence is outside Greater Victoria.

Scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students who intend to continue their studies at the University of Victoria as follows:

1. One scholarship to a student in each of the programs: Child and Youth Care, Nursing and Social Work, on the recommendation of the respective Directors;

2. One scholarship to a student who has completed the qualifying 300-level courses for an Honours or Major program in Astronomy;

3. Two scholarships for award within the student body at large. If no suitable candidates can be found in categories (1) or (2), additional awards can be made in category (3).

One or more awards are given in alternate years to undergraduate students continuing into third or fourth year in the Faculty of Social Sciences or the School of Social Work who:

1. have demonstrated financial need, and
2. are pursuing studies related to the subject of equity and human rights, and
3. are members of groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity, including, but not limited to:

• First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples and all other Indigenous peoples;
• members of groups that commonly experience discrimination due to race, ancestry, colour, religion and/or spiritual beliefs or place of origin;
• persons with visible and/or invisible (physical and/or mental) disabilities;
• persons who identify as women; and
• persons of marginalized sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions.

Applicants must submit a letter outlining how their studies have or will relate to the subject of equity and human rights. Preference is for students who have worked or volunteered with a community service organization (such as transition houses, crisis centres or friendship centres).  Applicants wanting to demonstrate they have worked or volunteered with a community service organization must include a statement (maximum 300 words) describing their paid or volunteer work. The award is given on a rotating basis, beginning with Faculty of Social Sciences.

Part-time students (registered in a minimum of 6.0 units for credit in two terms) are eligible for this Award. Approval of the recipients is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of either the Faculty of Social Sciences or the School of Social Work.

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students in the School of Social Work who have demonstrated financial need and have demonstrated resilience to overcome personal challenges. Preference is for students who meet one or more of these criteria, in the following order of priority:
1. are mature students (aged 30 and over) or
2. are single parents or have family responsibilities or
3. have indicated interest in a social work career in community activation, mental health, family law or dealing with family violence.

Applicants must submit a personal statement (max 500 words) describing how they have demonstrated resilience to overcome personal challenges.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senae Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Social Work.
