Bursaries requiring separate application

Entry bursaries are available to all eligible undergraduate full-time continuing students applying to continue to BSN degree completion at The University of Victoria from a Collaboratation for Academic Education in Nursing (CAEN) Program partner institute. This bursary may be applied for only once (upon admission to UVic). Please see the School of Nursing website for applications and deadlines.

Dorothy Kergin Bursaries are available to all eligible undergraduate full-time students currently enrolled in the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria. Students may apply for a Dorothy Kergin Bursary for each term of full-time study in the program. Please see the School of Nursing website for applications and deadlines.

General bursary application

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Aboriginal Health Career Bursary

One or more bursaries will be awarded to students of Aboriginal heritage (First Nations, Métis, or Inuit) enrolled in the following health degree programs: BSN, Masters of Nursing Nurse Practitioner (NP) or PhD n Nursing. Applicants must be registered in full-time studies at UVic. The delivery of the program/course may be through either distance education or on-campus. First preference will be given to Aboriginal students from Vancouver Island. Second preference will be given to Aboriginal students from within BC. Third preference will be given to Aboriginal students from within Canada.

Christine Elworthy Bursary in the School of Nursing*

One or more bursaries are awarded to 3rd or 4th year undergraduate students in the School of Nursing.  Preference will be given to a student who is a single parent.

Coby van Der Zeijst Memorial Bursary

A bursary of $1000 is awarded to a 3rd or 4th year student in the School of Nursing.

Dorothy Lucile Adams Bursary*

A bursary is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student in the School of Nursing. It is the wish of the School of Nursing that the first year of the award be given to an undergraduate student and the following year a graduate student alternating every year after that.

Eileen Lillian Cowling Memorial Bursary*

A bursary is awarded to a student in the School of Nursing who is pursuing a career in community nursing.

Irene Harris Memorial Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to women students in the School of Nursing. This award is established in memory of Miss Harris who was a teacher of nursing in China for many years.

Island Community Home Support Services Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students registered in the BSN program with the School of Nursing, with preference given to students who are currently working in geriatrics and intend to pursue a career in geriatrics.

Karen McFadzean Bursary*

Kathleen Nora Comerford Memorial Bursary*

Muriel Ford Memorial Bursary*

A bursary of $3,000 is awarded to a student in the School of Nursing who is supporting dependent children and who is entering the final year of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Preference will be given to a student interested in community nursing or health promotion

Steve Peterson Memorial Bursary in Nursing*

A bursary will be awarded annually to a needy student in the School of Nursing, who has a strong academic record.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.

Edna Mary Wootten Scholarship*

Students registered in at least 4.50 academic units are eligible for this scholarship.

Eleanor Mitchell Allen Award in Nursing*

One or more awards are given to women undergraduate students entering third or fourth year in the School of Nursing who have demonstrated financial need. Students with a minimum GPA of 4.0 are eligible. Students registered in at least 4.50 graded units are eligible for this scholarship.

Hilda Shilliday Nursing Award

One or more awards are given to continuing or transferring undergraduate students in the School of Nursing, with preference for students with financial need. Students registered in at least 4.5 units per term are eligible for this award. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Nursing.

Jack Howard Jackson Memorial Award

One or more awards are given to entering, continuing or transferring undergraduate Indigenous students with Canadian citizenship who have demonstrated financial need and who are enrolled in any of the following: the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, School of Nursing, School of Health Information Science or the Department of Psychology.

Jan Huggan Nursing Award for Protected Persons, Refugees and Permanent Residents

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students in the School of Nursing. Preference will be given in the following order:

  • students who have protected person or refugee status, with preference for students who have financial need
  • students who have Canadian permanent residency status, with preference for students who have financial need
  • all other students, with preference for students who have financial need

Applicants meeting preference #1 must submit a letter from the Manager, International Student Advising that confirms protected person or refugee status. 

Students in nursing registered in at least 4.5 units per term are eligible for this award.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Nursing.

Jan Huggan Undergraduate Nursing Award

One or more awards are given to women undergraduate students in the School of Nursing who are single parents. Preference is for students with demonstrated financial need. Students registered in at least 4.5 units per term are eligible for this award.

Kathleen Mary Oliver Nursing Scholarship

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the School of Nursing. Applicants must submit a statement (maximum 500 words) demonstrating their interest in public health to the School of Nursing by April 30th

Students registered in at least 4.50 academic units are eligible for this scholarship.

Lloyd Milburn Undergraduate Scholarship

One or more scholarships of $5,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding entering, continuing or transferring undergraduate students with a physical disability in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, the Faculty of Science or the School of Nursing.  Preference will be given to students who are entering UVic from a Vancouver Island high school.

Marg Eastman Undergraduate Award in Nursing

Two awards of at least $1,000 each are given to undergraduate students in the School of Nursing to assist with travel and/or registration fees to attend a conference. Applicants must include a brief description (50-100 words) of how this conference will benefit their studies and a budget detailing their costs.  Students must apply to the School of Nursing by February 15. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Nursing.   

Robert and Audrey Harry Indigenous Scholarship in Nursing*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding Indigenous undergraduate students in the School of Nursing. 

Students registered in at least 4.50 academic units are eligible for this scholarship.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Nursing.

Royal Jubilee Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association Student Award*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate or graduate students continuing in the School of Nursing or enrolled in a program related to Nursing in either Health Information Science or the School of Public Health and Social Policy.

Eligibility is based on the following order or priority:
1. Alumnae of the Royal Jubilee School of Nursing,
2. Descendants of an alumna of the Royal Jubilee School of Nursing. Applicants must state their relationship to the alumna, their alumna's maiden name (if applicable) and the year the alumna graduated,
3. Undergraduate students in the BSN program.

Undergraduate students can apply via the online In-course application via MyPage under Student Awards and Financial Aid. Graduate students can apply by April 30th at the Dean of Human and Social Development office.

Undergraduate students registered in at least 4.50 academic units and graduate students registered in at least 3.0 academic units are eligible for this scholarship.

Approval of the recipients will be made by either the Senate Committee on Awards or the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee, upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Human and Social Development.

Sharron Higgins Scholarship in the School of Nursing*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student who is entering their 3rd year in the School of Nursing and intends to complete 4th year in the following year, and also who is a parent. Preference will be given to a student who is planning to practice in the field of Public Health Nursing. 

Students registered in at least 4.50 academic units are eligible for this scholarship.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Nursing.

Sheila Ryan and Eileen Ryan Undergraduate Award in Nursing*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students in the School of Nursing, with preference to students who have demonstrated financial need. Undergraduate students registered in at least 4.50 academic units are eligible for this scholarship.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Beatrice Patriquin Scholarship*

Certificate of Outstanding Academic Distinction in Human and Social Development*

A certificate of distinction and a prize of at least $1000 is awarded to the student with the highest graduating grade point average in the Faculty of Human and Social Development registered for the BA, BCYC, BSc, BSN or BSW degree.

Elsa Groundwater Scholarship

Two scholarships of $2,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the School of Nursing who are specializing in the operating room. 

Students registered in at least 4.50 academic units are eligible for this scholarship.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Nursing.

Elsa Stephens Scholarship in Nursing*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student in the School of Nursing. Preference will be given to a student who is contributing to the community. 

Students registered in at least 4.50 academic units are eligible for this scholarship.

Elta Brown and Peggy Mika Nursing Scholarship

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students continuing in the School of Nursing who have demonstrated potential to provide leadership within a community or professional role.  Students registered in at least 4.50 academic units are eligible for this scholarship. Esther S. Gardom Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded by the Canadian Federation of University Women Victoria to an outstanding woman student proceeding to year 4 of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. 

Students registered in at least 4.50 academic units are eligible for this scholarship.

Eva Hannah Parlee Scholarship*

Mrs. Annie Greskiw Scholarship in Nursing*

Pacific Blue Cross Scholarship

Two scholarships of $1,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding students in the School of Nursing who have transferred from a College in British Columbia.

Students registered in at least 4.50 academic units are eligible for this scholarship.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Nursing.

Peter and Leela M. Bertram Scholarship*

Purves Sister Memorial Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to students in the School of Nursing with an interest in specializing in children's diseases and the treatment of children's diseases. Students registered in at least 4.50 academic units are eligible for this scholarship.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Nursing. 

Robert S. Evans Memorial Scholarship*

Scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students who intend to continue their studies at the University of Victoria as follows:

  1. One scholarship to a student in each of the programs: Child and Youth Care, Nursing and Social Work, on the recommendation of the respective Directors;

  2. One scholarship to a student who has completed the qualifying 300-level courses for an Honours or Major program in Astronomy;

  3. Two scholarships for award within the student body at large. If no suitable candidates can be found in categories (1) or (2), additional awards can be made in category (3). 

Students registered in at least 4.50 academic units are eligible for this scholarship.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Nursing.

Wendy Copeland Cooper Award*

One award of at least $1,000 is given to an undergraduate student in the School of Nursing. Students registered in at least 4.50 academic units are eligible for this scholarship.  Preference will be given to a student who has not previously received this award.
