Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Angus and Annie MacKay Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Preference is given to students with physical disabilities.

Geraldine Williamson Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Robertson Wiens Mathematics Bursary

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate students entering second, third or fourth year in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Preference is for students entering fourth year, second preference is for students entering third year.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

The scholarships below:

  • require an online application via Online tools submitted between February 15 - April 30, unless otherwise stated in the Terms of Awards.
  • are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Excellence in Math Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more scholarships of between $1,000 to $4,000 are awarded to students entering the University of Victoria directly from secondary schools who have achieved outstanding performance on The Fermat (Grade 11 Mathematics Contest) and/or The Euclid (Grade 12 Mathematics Contest).

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes. 

  • Unless stated otherwise, the application must be made through completion of the in-course scholarship application on UVic Online tools.
  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.
  • Some of the following awards may require application through the Department of Mathematics and Statistics; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

 

Ian and Sheila Barrodale Award in Computer Science and Mathematics*

Value: at least $2,000 | Number: Varies

Awards of at least $2,000 each are awarded to one or more undergraduate students in the Department of Computer Science and one or more undergraduate students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics who:

  • Are currently enrolled in Computer Science or Mathematics Co-operative Education or the Work Experience Program (WEP).
  • Have demonstrated (a) determination to improve their academic standing, and/or (b) initiative through involvement in extracurricular activities in the community or within their program.

Application forms are available from the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and must be returned by April 30th.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Jesse Short-Gershman Memorial Scholarship*

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

One scholarship of at least $1,000 is awarded to an undergraduate student in the Department of Computer Science and one scholarship of at least $1,000 is awarded to an undergraduate student in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics who submit a one-page essay indicating a mental health challenge they faced/are facing and what they learned/are learning through the experience.

The essay should address activities that the student has participated in, such as: leadership, tutoring, peer mentoring, advocacy or self-care, which demonstrate how they have worked/are working on overcoming these challenges. Students with a GPA of 6.0 or higher will normally be considered.

Selection of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards. If one recipient from each Department is not possible in a given year, then two recipients from one Department may be selected.

W.R. (Bill) Gordon Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate third or fourth year students in a Major or Honours program in the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Engineering, with preference being given to students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Students must have made a significant contribution to one or more aspects of university life through involvement in areas such as student athletic programs, student affairs or service on university bodies or committees.

Applications must be submitted to the Student Awards and Financial Aid Office via their online application by May 31st and must be accompanied by a letter or resume describing their contributions.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

 

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Betty and Gilbert Kennedy Scholarship in Mathematics*

One or more scholarships are awarded to outstanding students beginning year 3 of an Honours or Major program in Mathematics.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

B.W. Pearse Science Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: 4

Four scholarships are awarded to third or fourth year students in an Honours or Majors program in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics and Physics and Astronomy.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics and Physics and Astronomy.

Capstone Scholarship*

One or more scholarships of at least $2,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics who have fourth-year standing and are working on a research project in discrete mathematics or mathematics education.

A student who currently holds another research award is not eligible for this scholarship. This scholarship will not be given to the same individual more than once.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

CFUW Victoria Anniversary Science Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A scholarship is awarded to a 3rd or 4th year academically outstanding woman student in an Honours or Major program in the Department of Physics and Astronomy or the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The scholarship celebrates the 100th anniversary of the first award given by Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Victoria in 1917.

Combined Computer Science and Mathematics Scholarship*

Value: at least $2,000 | Number: Varies

One or more scholarships of at least $2,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering their third year of studies in either the Major: Combined Computer Science and Mathematics or the Honours: Combined Computer Science and Mathematics program who have the highest GPA in their program. In the event of a tie, preference will be given to a student pursuing the co-op option. This scholarship will not be given to the same individual more than once.

David A. Zalinger Statistics Scholarship

Value: $1,500 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $1,500 is awarded to a student who is entering or continuing in a program in Statistics and who has demonstrated the greatest improvement in second year.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

James Riddell Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to one or more students entering second year for outstanding performance in Mathematics 101 (Calculus II).

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Lothar Hermann Redlin Memorial Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate continuing students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Marion (Watson) MacLeod Memorial Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more scholarships, of no more than $1,000 each, are awarded to undergraduate students who have been required to upgrade their mathematical background by taking Math 120 (or its equivalent) and subsequently received a grade of B- or higher in Math 101.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Mark Mitenko Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in Calculus and Physics who is entering second year.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Mark E. Mooney Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding third year student in an Applied Mathematics and Physics program. 

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Marvin Shinbrot Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is made to an outstanding student beginning the third or fourth year of an Honours program in Mathematics or the Honours Program in Physics and Mathematics.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Mathematics and Statistics Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Honours or combined Honours program in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Paul Smith Memorial Prize*

A prize is awarded to one or more University of Victoria students performing meritoriously in the William Lowell Putnam Competition.

Stephen A. Jennings Memorial Scholarship*

One or two scholarships are awarded to outstanding students entering the third or fourth year of an honours program offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Preference will be given to a student who has performed well in the W.L. Putnam competition.
