Entrance scholarships for international undergraduate students

The University of Victoria awards entrance scholarships to academically outstanding international undergraduate students. The exact number of scholarships varies each year, depending on available funding. 

These scholarships and awards are meant for international undergraduate students who are not studying a Canadian secondary school diploma. *International undergraduate students completing a Canadian secondary school diploma, please see the Eligibility section.

Eligibility

International students must be admitted to the University of Victoria before being considered for an entrance scholarship. Eligible candidates are automatically referred to Student Awards & Financial Aid by Undergraduate Admissions.

  • International students must send in an interim transcript (if a current secondary school student) or a final transcript (if a student has graduated within two years of application and has not attended another post-secondary institution) by March 15 to Undergraduate Admissions to be assessed for an International Scholarship.
  • Eligible candidates are automatically referred to Student Awards & Financial Aid by Undergraduate Admissions.

Aga Khan Academy Renewable Scholarship

A scholarship of $90,000, payable at $22,500 per year over four years, is awarded to an academically outstanding international student entering an undergraduate degree program at the University of Victoria directly from an Aga Khan Academy. Canadian citizens and permanent residents are not eligible for this scholarship. Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic excellence, community service, and school involvement and leadership. The financial need of the applicant will also be considered.

To be automatically renewed a student must have completed a total of 12 or more academic units in two terms of study between May and April and maintained a grade point average of 7.50 or higher on the best 12 units. The scholarship is automatically renewed for each year of the student's full time study until completion of a first degree or for a maximum of four years, whichever is the shorter period. A student whose grade point falls below 7.50 may file a written appeal with the Senate Committee on Awards to seek special consideration for the renewal of the scholarship. Students registered in a co-op or work experience or work term will automatically be renewed when they next complete 12 or more graded units in two terms, provided they have a grade point average of 7.50 or higher in the two terms. Any student who takes neither a co-op or work experience work term nor academic units for one or more terms may forfeit their scholarship.

To be considered you must:

  • Be admitted to the University of Victoria
  • Be entering your first undergraduate degree program
  • Have an excellent academic record ("A" average, or minimum of 32 IB points)
  • Be an international student on a study permit status
  • Meet UVic's academic and English proficiency requirements. See English Language Proficiency requirements
  • Submit an online application via your UVic Online tools and have all required documentation, including your nominator's documentation sent to entrance@uvic.ca between January 01 and March 15.

Please note, students must be nominated by a school guidance counsellor, principal or department head at an Aga Khan Academy. The nominator must be able to comment on the student's academic performance, future goals, leadership qualities and their potential for success at the University of Victoria. The nominator MUST complete the required Form B and provide a reference letter and submit the information to entrance@uvic.ca by the end of the day on March 15.

  • One Scholarship of $90,000, payable at $22,500 per year over 4 years
  • Renewable up to 3 years or completion of first undergraduate degree

To Apply

Complete the online Aga Khan Academy Application and send in all required documents by March 15.

How to access the online application:

  1. Have a NetLink ID
  2. Go to www.uvic.ca and sign onto your UVic Online tools using your NetLink ID
  3. If you are not yet admitted to UVic, but have submitted an admissions application, select "Applicant Services". If you have been admitted to UVic, select "Student Services"
  4. Select "View and apply for awards"
  5. Select the 2022-2023 study period and select the "Aga Khan Academy Scholarship Application"
  6. Complete the online application
  7. Send in the required Student Supporting Documentation: Awards and recognition statement, activities statement, essay question (500 words), community reference letter, budget sheet.
  8. Have your Nominator send in the required Nominator Documentation: Form B, reference letter

Student Supporting Documentation

  • Awards and recognition statement: Submit a list of awards and recognitions you have received including scholarships and prizes received in the last three years. Please include the date that each award was received as well as the granting institution or organization.
  • Activities Statement: Submit a list of your extra-curricular and volunteer activities in the last three years. Please list them in order of significance, and include the start and end dates as well as the number of hours a week/month of involvement.
  • Essay Question (500 word maximum): Describe a recent challenge and how you responded to it. Explain what you learned, and how this experience will help you transition to student life at the University of Victoria.
  • Community reference letter: This letter of reference would be written by someone other than a family member or close friend who is familiar with your various roles in the community. *Please have your reference comment on your future goals, leadership qualities, adaptability, initiative and your potential for success at the University of Victoria. The reference should include their name, contact information including email, as well as the period of time they have known you and in what capacity. The letter must be signed and sent to entrance@uvic.ca by the end of the day on March 15, and include Aga Khan Academy Scholarship in the subject line.
  • Financial Need Assessment: The University of Victoria international scholarship supports those students who would otherwise be unable to attend the University of Victoria because of financial reasons. Please complete the Budget Sheet if you wish to be considered for the Aga Khan Academy Scholarship.

Required Nominator Information Documentation

Nominators are one of the following:

  • School Guidance Counsellor
  • Principal
  • Department Head

The nominator MUST:

  • Complete Form B: Nominator Information (click on the link to download and complete the form) and,
  • Submit a reference letter commenting on the student's academic performance, future goals, leadership qualities, adaptability and initiative. Please also explain how the student demonstrates the academic preparedness and emotional maturity necessary to ensure their success at the University of Victoria.

Both Form B and the nominator reference letter must be sent to entrance@uvic.ca by March 15.

Award for Student Refugees

One or more awards, between $500 to $2,000 each, are given to undergraduate students with protected person or permanent residency status (under one of the Refugee Application Class categories) who are not currently supported by the World University Service of Canada (WUSC).

Applicants must submit a letter from the Manager, International Student Advising that confirms protected person or refugee status. Part-time students (a minimum of 6.0 units) are eligible for this award. WUSC students, in their first year of study, are not eligible as they are supported by other funding.

Doreen Sutherland Undergraduate Award for Permanent Residents, Protected Persons and Refugee Women in Health Information Science*

One or more awards are given to entering or continuing women undergraduate students in the School of Health Information Science with protected person, permanent resident or refugee status who have demonstrated financial need.

Applicants who are a protected person or refugee must submit a letter from the Manager, International Student Advising that confirms this status.

East China Normal University Renewable Scholarship

A scholarship of $20,000 (payable at $5,000 per year) will be awarded to an academically outstanding international undergraduate student entering the University of Victoria from the No. 2 Secondary School attached to East China Normal University.

Note: a scholarship recipient will be nominated by No. 2 Secondary School attached to East China Normal University.

The scholarship is automatically renewed for each year of the student's full-time study until completion of a first degree or for a maximum of three years, whichever is the shorter period.

Greg and Tanya Kuhn International Student Award

One or more awards are given to entering or continuing undergraduate international students who have demonstrated financial need. First preference is for students in the Faculty of Humanities, second preference is for students in the Faculty of Science.

International IB Scholarship

International students completing the International Baccalaureate program with a minimum of 32 IB points will be considered for an Entrance Scholarship, provided they send in interim/final IB scores by March 15 to Undergraduate Admissions.

Note: transcripts received after the deadline will not be eligible for GPA based scholarships.

International Student Support Award

One or more awards, of at least $1,000 each, are given to entering or continuing international undergraduate students who have demonstrated financial need. Part-time students (minimum of 6.0 units) are eligible.

Nelson Family Award*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more awards are given to entering or continuing undergraduate international students from sub-Saharan Africa with demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to students in the Faculty of Human and Social Development.

University of Victoria International Entrance Scholarship

One or more scholarships with a value of at least $5,000 are awarded to academically outstanding international students entering the first year of an undergraduate degree program at the University of Victoria.

UVic International Women's Achievement Scholarship

Value: $5,000 | Number: Varies

Up to twenty scholarships of $5,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding international students entering the University of Victoria from St. Margaret’s School in Saanich, B.C.
If all twenty scholarships cannot be awarded to international students entering UVic from St. Margaret’s School, the balance can be given to:

  • domestic students from St. Margaret’s School in Saanich, B.C. entering an undergraduate program or
  • international women students entering an undergraduate program in the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Engineering & Computer Science.

Vikes International Athlete Award

Value: $10,000 | Number: Varies

One or more awards of $40,000, payable at $10,000 per year over 4 years, are given to international undergraduate students entering or transferring to UVic and who compete on any Vikes Varsity team at the University of Victoria.

The award is automatically renewed for each year of a student's full-time study until the completion of the first degree or for a maximum of three years, whichever is the shorter period, provided they meet and maintain U SPORTS eligibility requirements.

Award recipients will be selected on the basis of work ethic, commitment and performance criteria by the Senior Director of Athletics and Recreation and the Director of Varsity Performance Sport.
