History Department Awards

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Audrey and Carl Mawby CFUW Saanich Peninsula Bursary

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

Bursaries are awarded to women undergraduate or graduate students studying Canadian or British History in the Department of History. Preference will be given to students who have a connection with the Saanich Peninsula.

Canadian Daughters' League, Assembly No. 5 Gertrude M. Ralston Memorial Bursary*

Value: Varies | Number: 1 

A bursary is awarded to a deserving student, preferably one in Canadian History.

Elsie G. Turnbull Bursary in BC History

Value: Varies | Number: 1 

An award will be made annually to a student who has successfully completed at least one year of studies,  with preference given to a student who is studying the history of British Columbia.

Helen Jessop Ford Bursary*

Value: Varies | Number: 1 

A bursary is awarded to a student continuing in the Department of History or the Department of Geography.

Mary and Allan Stubbs Memorial Bursary

Value: $500 | Number: 1 

A bursary of $500 is awarded to an undergraduate student in an Honours or Major degree program in English literature or in British History.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.
  • Some of the following awards may require application through the Department of History; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

 

Allan and Elizabeth McKinnon Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a senior student of high academic standing engaged in a Major or Honours program in Canadian history who would find it difficult to resume studies without financial aid.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

John Gough Scholarship for Studies in the History of the Environment*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding major or honours students entering third or fourth year in the Department of History. Applicants must submit a summary (max 500 words) of an essay they have written, or created an equivalent project (such as a website), that addresses the historical relationship between humans and their environment. Applications must be submitted to the Department of History by March 31. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Michiel Horn and Cornelia Schuh Scholarship*

One or more scholarships of at least $2,500 are awarded to 3rd or 4th year Honours History or Honours History/English students. Preference will be given to students who can demonstrate financial need.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Sydney G. Pettit Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students registered in a major or honours program in the Department of History who have demonstrated financial need.

Approval of the recipient(s) is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed below.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Alexander and Phyllis Macleod Baird Memorial Prize in Scottish History*

A prize is awarded to the student in the Department of History who writes the best essay on a topic in Scottish History. The award has been established by Mrs. A. MacLeod Baird in memory of her husband who was very interested in the role played by the Scots in Canada's history.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Barry Gough Scholarship in History*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering 2nd or 3rd year majoring in History who have declared an interest in Imperial and/or British Columbian history.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

 

Canadian History Scholarship*

One or more scholarships of at least $1,000 each are awarded to students with the highest academic standing in introductory Canadian history courses.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Charlotte S.M. Girard Book Prize in French History*

Value: Book | Number: 1

A book prize is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student enrolled in a French history course. The prize is given in recognition of Professor Girard's contribution as a former teacher in the Department of History.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Churchill Foundation Vancouver Island's Shirley Burstall Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the 3rd or 4th year of a majors program in History and who best exemplifies the character and qualities of the Right Honourable Sir Winston Spencer Churchill with emphasis on leadership, courage, innovation, determination and magnanimity.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Doreen and John Windsor Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students graduating from the Department of History who are honours students specializing in Canadian History.

Dr. Shawn Cafferky Scholarship in Military History*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding students demonstrating excellence in a course(s) related to Military History in the Department of History.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Dr. Toby Jackman Book Prize in British History*

Value: Book | Number: 1

A book prize is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student enrolled in an advanced course in British History. This prize is established by Dr. Jackman's colleagues on the occasion of his retirement from the University.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Frank Sylvester Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Department of History, with preference for students studying BC history. Approval of the recipients is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Gregory Blue Scholarship in Global History*

One or more scholarships of at least $1,000 are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate Department of History students (continuing or graduating), with preference given to students with a demonstrated commitment to Global History, ideally with a focus on the Global South. 

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Grotius Award in Modern History*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

An annual award is to be given for the best Honours graduating essay in British or European History. If no suitable essay is presented, no award will be made. Should the graduating essay cease to be a requirement of the Honours program, the award may be given to the student writing the best graduate thesis in British or European History.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards or the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Graduate Studies upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Harper Scholarship in History*

Value: $1,000 | Number: Varies

One or more scholarships of at least $1,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in a Major or Honours program in History, with a strong preference for students with a demonstrated commitment to World History.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History. 

Helen Jessop Ford Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student continuing in the Department of History or the Department of Geography.

Hendrickson Prize in B.C. History*

A prize is awarded to an outstanding student enrolled in year four of a major or honours program in History. Preference is given to a student specializing in the history of British Columbia.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Hutchinson Bekius Scholarship in History*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate history student studying either the Canadian West or immigration to Western Canada.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Inspiring Historians Legacy Scholarship*

One or more scholarships, of at least $1,000 each, will be awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering fourth year with a declared Major in History.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

J. Walter Grant Book Prize in British Columbia History*

Value: Book | Number: 1

A book prize is awarded to an outstanding student in a senior course devoted to British Columbia history. The award is made by the Victoria Carnarvon Club in memory of J. Walter Grant.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

John Money Memorial Prize in British History

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

A prize of $1,000 is awarded to an undergraduate student with the highest mark in a course on British History. Preference will be given to a student in either HSTR 220A or HSTR 220B.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Kathleen Agnew Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded for the purpose of stimulating the study of the History of Canada.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Ken Coates Book Prize*

Value: Book | Number: 1

A book prize is awarded to an outstanding student enrolled in a history course devoted to First Nations studies.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Ladner Book Prize for the Study of the History of British Columbia

A book prize is awarded to an outstanding student of the History of British Columbia.

Leon J. Ladner B.C. History Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to the best undergraduate student studying the History of British Columbia.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Lieutenant-General S.F. Clark, CBE CD Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A scholarship is awarded to a student of high academic standing in three units of senior undergraduate or graduate course work (or equivalent) dealing with military history or defence studies given in the Department of History or the Department of Political Science.

Approval of the winner will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History or the Department of Political Science.

Lord Selkirk Association of Rupert's Land (Victoria Branch) - Bompas Book Prize*

Value: Prize | Number: 1

A prize is awarded to a student in the Department of History who is enrolled in a course on the history of the Selkirk Settlers or early Western Canadian History. Preference will be given to a student enrolled in a course on Early Canadian History in Manitoba.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Major-General G.R. Pearkes, VC, Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student in the Department of History with the highest standing in three units of third or fourth year courses dealing with military history or defence studies.  Courses eligible for consideration in any year will be identified in the History Department Handbook.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Maureen Dobbin Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A scholarship is awarded to the student in a Major or Honours program in History who best combines academic excellence with contributions to the University and/or the community.

Nomination forms for this scholarship are available from the Department of History and must be submitted by April 15.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

A scholarship is awarded to the student of History who writes the best essay dealing with the Magna Carta, the Petition of Rights and the Bill of Rights as the Fountainhead of Constitutional Liberties. This scholarship can be awarded to a graduating student. 

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Prince and Princess Nicholas Abkhazi Book Prize in Russian History*

A book prize is awarded to the student who writes the best essay dealing with some aspect of Russian History related to the reign of Tsar Alexander II.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Professor Alfred E. Loft Memorial Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in a Major or Honours program in the Department of History who are studying Canadian History.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

R.H. Roy Scholarship in Military History*

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student enrolled in a military history course. The award is given in recognition of Professor Roy's contribution as a former teacher in the Department of History.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Sydney G. Pettit Book Prize in European History*

A book prize is awarded to an outstanding student in European history. The prize is given in recognition of Professor Pettit's teaching and administrative contributions to the Department of History.

A prize is awarded to an outstanding first or second year student in an introductory course in British History.

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in Canadian History in any year.

Victoria Historical Society Scholarship

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate 4th year student studying Canadian History in the Department of History. Preference will be given to a student studying BC History.

Willard E. Ireland Scholarship in History*

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student who has completed third year and is in a Major or Honours program in History. Preference will be given to a student specializing in Canadian History.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.
