Achievement Awards recognize undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the pursuit of excellence in their endeavours. Fine arts, athletics, and other areas where individual expression becomes public are recognized through these awards. Recipients must have demonstrated financial need and a minimum 3.5 sessional grade point average for students continuing at or transferring to UVic, or a 70% admission average for students commencing postsecondary studies for the first time. Departments will distribute application forms to prospective students, who will complete and return them to the Office of the Dean of Fine Arts.

Bursaries

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Arthur Checkley Memorial Bursary*

Diane Mary Hallam Achievement Award

Kathy Bakony Scholarship in Art History and Visual Studies

One or more scholarships of at least $1,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students transferring into or continuing in the Department of Art History and Visual Studies.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Art History and Visual Studies.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed below.

Audrey St. Denys and M.E. Johnson Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in Faculty of Fine Arts.

  • In the case of an undergraduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.
  • In the case of a graduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.

Dr. Carol Gibson Scholarship

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate fourth year student in an Honours program in the Department of Art History & Visual Studies.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Art History & Visual Studies.

Flora Hamilton Burns Scholarship*

A scholarship, donated by Flora Hamilton Burns in memory of Emily Carr, is awarded to an outstanding student entering fourth year of the B.A. Program in Art History & Visual Studies with an announced intention of proceeding to further study in this discipline.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Art History & Visual Studies.

Henriette Ann Schmidt Scholarship

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Art History & Visual Studies specializing in Indigenous art, with preference given to students studying Pre-Columbian art. In the event that there are insufficient candidates who meet the criteria above, scholarships will be awarded to other academically outstanding undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Art History & Visual Studies.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards or the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Art History & Visual Studies.

Martlet Chapter, Iode Prize for Scholarship in Art History and Visual Studies*

Patricia Burns Keir Prize in Canadian Art*

A book prize is awarded to an outstanding student enrolled in a course on the history of Canadian art.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Art History & Visual Studies.

Stephen and Eunice Lowe Legacy Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to either academically outstanding undergraduate or graduate students studying Asian Art in the Department of Art History & Visual Studies. Preference is given to students studying the history of Chinese Art.

  • In the case of an undergraduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.
  • In the case of a graduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts.
