French and Francophone Studies Department Awards

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Major Keith W.A. MacDougall Memorial Bursary*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A bursary will be awarded annually to a deserving undergraduate student in need of assistance who is majoring in French and who is interested in continuing studies in the field.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes. 

  • Unless stated otherwise, the application must be made through completion of the in-course scholarship application on UVic Online tools.
  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.
  • Some of the following awards may require application through the Department of French and Francophone Studies; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

 

Grace and Harry Hickman Scholarship*

Scholarships will be awarded to assist students to study French at a university in any region or country where French is the dominant language and where an immersive language and cultural experience is present. Applicants must be registered in a full time program, including at least one course in French, at the University of Victoria, and intend to study at a university where the language of instruction is French for one or more semesters and to return to the University of Victoria to complete the program requirements. The scholarship will be paid upon receipt of documents demonstrating the student’s registration at an acceptable institution. Students in any year of study are eligible. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards on upon the recommendation of the Department of French and Francophone Studies.

Written applications, including details of the proposed program, are to be submitted to the Department of French and Francophone Studies by April 1 of the academic year preceding the proposed study at another institution.

Myrna McEwen Daniels Scholarship*

Four or more scholarships of a maximum of $2,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering second, third or fourth year and majoring in French. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need. Students may receive this award more than once. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of French and Francophone Studies.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of French and Francophone Studies.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Adeline Julienne Deloume Memorial Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students who attain the highest grades in their first year or second year in French and Francophone Studies courses who are proceeding towards a major or honours degree in French and Francophone Studies.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of French and Francophone Studies.

Alliance Francaise De Victoria Book Prize in Memory of Dr. W. D. Witherspoon*

Value: Book | Number: 1

A book prize is awarded to a student graduating with a Major in French. The prize is made possible through donations from members of the Alliance Francaise de Victoria.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of French and Francophone Studies.

Constance Ann Pettit Scholarship*

Value: $1,000 | Number: Varies

Scholarships of at least $1,000 each will be awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering third or fourth year in a major or honours program in the Department of French and Francophone Studies.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of French and Francophone Studies.

Didier Bergeret Scholarship*

Value: $1,000 | Number: Varies

One or more scholarships of at least $1,000 each will be awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in a Major or Honours program in the Department of French and Francophone Studies.

Katharine Youdall Memorial Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A scholarship is awarded by the Canadian Federation of University Women Victoria to an outstanding woman student entering the third or fourth year of a Major or Honours program in French.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of French and Francophone Studies.

Madame Berangere Steel Memorial Award*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students who attain the highest grades in FRAN 275 (Writing in French 1) and who are proceeding towards a major or honours degree in French and Francophone Studies.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of French and Francophone Studies.

The Consul General of Switzerland Book Prize

Value: Book | Number: 3

These book prizes will be awarded to an outstanding student of French language and literature, to a student with highstanding in German, and to an outstanding student in Italian.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies.
