English Department Awards

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Ailsa and Roger Bishop Bursary Fund*

One or more bursaries are awarded annually to deserving students in the Department of English, with preference given to students in an Honours or Major program.

Bethel M. Watts Bursary in English*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A bursary is awarded to a student in year three or four of an honours or major program in the Department of English.

Charles and Ruth Haywood Memorial Bursary in English Literature*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more bursaries are awarded to entering or continuing undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of English. Preference will be given to students studying English Literature.

English Department M.A. Bursary*

Bursaries are awarded to graduate students registered in the English M.A. program.

English Faculty Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students in the Department of English taking 6.0 to 13.5 units.

Ethel Dent Banks and Margaret Maunsell Bursary*

A bursary is awarded to a woman student continuing in either the Department of English or the Department of Writing.

Gerald Spencer ("AB") and Marion Kent Bursary in English*

Value: Varies | Number: 1 

A bursary is awarded to a student proceeding to third or fourth year, who has completed a course in the English Department related to the history of the English language.

Irene Lee Bursary in English*

One or more bursaries are awarded to student entering year three or four of an Honours or Major program in the Department of English.

Maeford Slocombe Bursary in English*

Two bursaries are awarded to students proceeding to the 3rd or 4th year of an honours or major program in English.

Mary and Allan Stubbs Memorial Bursary

Value: $500 | Number: 1

A bursary of $500 is awarded to an undergraduate student in an Honours or Major degree program in English literature or in British History.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section.
These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

  • Unless stated otherwise, the application must be made through completion of the in-course scholarship application on UVic Online tools.
  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.
  • Some of the following awards may require application through the Department of English; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

 

Churchill Foundation Vancouver Island Barry Gough Scholarship in English*

One or more scholarships, of at least $1,000 each, are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students who are majoring in English, entering third or fourth year and who demonstrate leadership, innovation and determination in their academics and community engagement. Applicants must submit a brief personal statement (maximum 500 words) that outlines the above criteria.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of English.

Ethel Dent Banks and Margaret Maunsell Award

One or more awards are given to undergraduate women students continuing in either the Department of English or the Department of Writing with demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to Indigenous women students.

Gilbert and Marie Alice Peart Award in English Literature*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students studying English Literature in the Department of English who demonstrate financial need.

Michiel Horn and Cornelia Schuh Scholarship*

One or more scholarships of at least $2,500 are awarded to 3rd or 4th year Honours History or Honours History/English students. Preference will be given to students who can demonstrate financial need.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of History.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of English.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Department of English Medal for Academic Excellence

Value: Medal | Number: 1

A medal is awarded to the graduating student in a Majors or Honours English program who has achieved the highest cumulative grade point average in senior English courses.

Doug Beardsley Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

One or more scholarships of at least $1,000 are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate English Major or Honours students who write the best paper on modern poetry.  

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of English.

Dr. Burton O. Kurth Scholarship for Excellence in English Honours*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student graduating in the English Honours Program who has achieved the highest cumulative grade point average in senior level English courses.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of English.

Edgar Ferrar Corbet Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded for proficiency in English to a second year student who is a graduate of a British Columbia high school and who will be majoring or honouring in English in the third year.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of English.

Grant McOrmond Scholarship in English*

One or more scholarships are awarded to third year students in the Department of English. Preference will be given to students studying Romantic Period Poets.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of English.

Irene Lee Scholarship in English*

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student proceeding to year 3 or 4 of a Major or Honours program in the Department of English.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of English.

John Peter Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded for excellence in English studies to a student in English 310 who is entering the third year of a Major or Honours program in English.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of English.

Kate Pottinger Thompson Memorial Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A scholarship is awarded to the Major or Honours student in English with the best overall performance in the third year.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of English.

Madame Sanderson Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a promising student for excellence in English and French of the second year.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of English.

Martlet Chapter Iode Cuthbert Holmes English Honours Essay Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to the student who has written the best English Honours graduating essay.

Approval of the recipient is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of English.

Pat Koster Essay in Early Women's Writing*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

One or two scholarships of at least $500 are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students who have written the best essays on women's writing from the period 1660 to 1914, with preference given to essays on women’s writing of the Restoration period or the eighteenth century. The winning students must be proceeding to third year, or above, of the English Major or Honours program.  In the case of students in their final undergraduate year, they must be continuing to the University of Victoria’s graduate program in English.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of English.

P.E.O, Chapter 'N' Memorial Prize

A prize is awarded by Chapter N, P.E.O. Sisterhood, to a woman student in first year for excellence in English.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of English.

Purves-Cordonier Prize

A prize is awarded to an undergraduate student demonstrating high academic achievement in the field of 17th and 18th Century English Literature.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of English.

Ralph Barbour Burry Memorial Scholarship*

Two scholarships are awarded for excellence in English studies to students entering the third or fourth year in an English Major or Honours program. In cases of comparable academic merit, contributions to university and/or community activities and financial need will be considered.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of English.

Royal Bride Chapter Iode Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to students who have completed a first year English course.

Royal Institution and Frank Eaton Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to the student taking the highest standing in English of the second year.
