Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Annie Finnerty Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to students in the Faculty of Education who are pursuing their degee in Education. Students cannot be in the Post-Degree Professional Program or have a degree in any other discipline. If two students have equal qualifications and need, then preference will be given to students who participate in 4H or other youth organizations pertaining to agriculture.

Art and Music Education Bursary

Two bursaries of $500 each are awarded to undergraduate students, one for a student studying in Art Education in the Faculty of Education and one for a student studying in Music Education in the School of Music.

Faculty of Education Emergency Bursary

One or more bursaries, to a maximum of $1,500 each, are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the Faculty of Education. Part time students are eligible (undergraduate students registered in a minimum of 6.0 units for credit in two terms and graduate students registered in a minimum of 1.5 units per term). The bursary is intended to offer students one-time financial assistance per term in the event of an unforeseen emergency or circumstance while attending the University of Victoria.

Taylor Education Bursary

Annual awards will be made to fourth year students showing outstanding ability and interest in Education and needing financial assistance. If no qualifying students are enrolled in fourth year, the bursaries may be awarded the next year or be presented to qualified students of the fifth year, at the discretion of the Faculty of Education. The award commemorates the interest in Education by the Taylor family of Victoria.

The Leeder Family Memorial Bursary in Education - Elementary*

Wendy M. Gedney Bursary in Elementary Education*

The bursary is awarded to one or more students in elementary education in the Faculty of Education.  Preference will be given to a mature student or a student who is a single parent.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be approved upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Mrs. Matilda M. Schill Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate student either entering from a college or university or continuing in the Faculty of Education, who have been admitted to a secondary teacher education program with an English teaching area or concentration. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Myrna and Terry Daniels Award in Indigenous Education*

One or more awards of $2,000 each are given to Indigenous undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education who are (in descending order of priority):
• entering or continuing in the Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization (BEd ILR) program,
• enroled in the Indigenous Education Post-Degree Professional Program (PDPP)
• enroled in the Diploma in Indigenous Language Revitalization program, or
• enroled in the Certificate in Indigenous Language Proficiency program,

Part-time students (registered in a minimum of 6.0 units for credit in two terms) are eligible. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society Award*

One or more awards are given to transferring or continuing undergraduate students in any discipline who are conducting innovative and creative research in Japanese Canadian history, art, culture, and/or language. Applicants must submit the following to the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Humanities, by May 15:

  1. A statement of intent (maximum 500 words) outlining their proposed research and describing how their work contributes to, promotes and/or engages with Japanese Canadian history, art, culture, and/or language;
  2. a letter of support from the UVic faculty member(s) who will supervise the proposed research; and
  3. a CV and official UVic transcript.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

50th Anniversary Education Entrance Scholarship

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded annually to an academically outstanding student entering the University of Victoria from a Canadian secondary school, college, or university who is pursuing an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Education.

COYA Scholarship

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding Indigenous undergraduate student born on Turtle Island (North America, including all areas from Mexico to Alaska) entering the Faculty of Education. Approval of the recipient is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Faculty of Education Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship*

Orca Book Publishers Award in Indigenous Language Revitalization

Value: Varies | Number: 1

One award is given to an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Education enrolled in either the Diploma in Indigenous Language Revitalization or the Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization who is developing their own language proficiency and has a strong record of contributing to their/a language community through their work.  Applications must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a community group/member providing evidence of the contributions the applicant has made. Completed applications and reference letters must be submitted to the Faculty of Education office by May 31. Part-time students (enrolled in at least 4.5 units) are eligible for this award.  Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards, upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

A. Hugh Salmond Memorial Scholarship in Elementary Science Education*

One or more scholarships are awarded to students entering their final year of a program in elementary education with a view to excellence in science education and or science education leadership. Student(s) must have demonstrated excellent teaching performance and the ability to use creative approaches to teaching as documented in practica reports, school visits and planning. Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

A. Hugh Salmond Memorial Scholarship in Secondary Science Education*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education who are entering their final year of a program in secondary education with a view to teaching science. Applicants must have volunteer experience while at the University of Victoria. Applications must be accompanied by two letters (max. 300 words) in support of their volunteer work.Application forms are available on the Faculty of Education’s website and must be submitted via email to adasst@uvic.ca by May 31.

Antony Legdon Education Award

Value: $1,500 | Number: 1

One award of $1,500 is given to an undergraduate or graduate student in the Faculty of Education who focuses on special education studies. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need.  Approval of the recipient will be made by either the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee or the Senate Committee on Awards, upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

The award is disbursed to an undergraduate or graduate student in alternating years starting in 2020 with an undergraduate student. 

Barbara J. Shenton Scholarship

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate mature student (23 years of age or older) who is a single parent studying education. Preference will be given to an eligible student with a background in social work or community work.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Dr. Jean Downie Dey Student Mobility Award*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education to travel within Canada or internationally to attend or present at a conference, workshop or travel to support their studies. Application forms are available on the Faculty of Education's website and must be submitted by December 1st to the Associate Dean Undergraduate Programs, Faculty of Education. Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Dryden Scholarship For Students with a Disability

A $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a student with a physical disability or a learning disability in an undergraduate program in the Faculty of Education on the basis of academic performance. Preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need.

Environmental Education Impact Award

An award is given to an undergraduate student continuing in the Faculty of Education who is actively engaged in educating others in sustainable practices to help create social change to address the environmental issues facing society. Applicants must submit a letter (maximum 500 words) outlining how they are engaged in action projects (interactive, educational, and address sustainability issues) or in educating others in sustainable practices. In addition, applicants must submit two letters of reference (maximum 300 words) demonstrating the impact of this work in either the classroom or the community.

Approval of the recipient is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Faculty of Education Student Leadership Award*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education who are actively involved as a student leader on-campus or in the community and demonstrate a record of outstanding contributions to the community through their work.

Three letters of reference are required from Faculty members, members of the community, or peers describing the applicant's university or community service contributions and leadership capabilities. Completed applications and reference letters must be submitted to the Faculty of Education office by May 31. Eligible students must have a minimum GPA of 6.0.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

H.D. Sauvan Award*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students entering their final year of a UVic teacher education program (B.Ed. or Post-Degree stream) and who are pursuing French Immersion teaching careers. The student must have demonstrated excellent teaching performance and a commitment to improving their French-speaking skills through, but not limited to, field schools, professional development, practicum placements, completing Diplôme d'études en langue française (DELF) requirements, etc. as documented in practica reports or coursework. Preference is for students with demonstrated financial need.

Hugh and Lilian Salmond Scholarship in Elementary Education*

A scholarship is awarded to a student entering their final year of a program in elementary education.  The student must have demonstrated excellent teaching performance and the ability to use innovative approaches to teaching as documented in practica reports and have achieved first class standing in coursework.  Application forms are available on the Faculty of Education’s website and must be submitted via email to adasst@uvic.ca by May 31.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Bachelor of Education Elementary degree program on behalf of the Faculty of Education.

Hugh and Lilian Salmond Scholarship in Secondary Education*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education who are entering their final year of a program in secondary education. Applicants must have volunteer experience while at the University of Victoria. Hugh Farquhar Memorial Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in a B.Ed. program. Selection will be based on the following criteria:
1. Outstanding academic achievement
2. Demonstrated contributions to a range of university and community activities.

The selection process at the Faculty level will include an interview of selected candidates.

Application forms for this award can be obtained from the Dean's Office in the Faculty of Education and must be submitted to that office by May 31st of each year.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Kathleen B. Tobin Memorial Award*

One or more awards are given to students entering the final year of the Bachelor of Education Program who have demonstrated financial need and a demonstrated aptitude in teaching primary students.

Linda Vey Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student in the Faculty of Education who has demonstrated a commitment to working with children with special needs requiring learning support.

  • In the form of a letter, applicants must submit evidence of their commitment, such as courses taken, paid employment or volunteer experience.
  • Applications must be submitted by May 31st to the Associate Dean Undergraduate Programs, Faculty of Education.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Mosaic Forest Management Award in Indigenous Language Revitalization

One award of $1,000 is given to an Indigenous undergraduate student in the Faculty of Education enrolled in the Certificate in Indigenous Language Proficiency (CILP), the Diploma in Indigenous Language Revitalization (DILR), the Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Language Proficiency or the Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization (BEd ILR) who is developing their own language proficiency and has a strong record of contributing to their community through their use of indigenous language in their work. Preference will be given to students from Vancouver Island Nations.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the Faculty of Education who have achieved academic excellence, and who are actively involved in the community and have a record of outstanding contributions to the community through their work as volunteers. Applications must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a community/volunteer group providing evidence of the exceptional contributions the applicant has made, and a second letter of recommendation from a Faculty of Education faculty member.

Application forms for this scholarship are available from the Dean’s Office in the Faculty of Education.

  • In the case of an undergraduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.
  • In the case of a graduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Orca Book Publishers Award in Indigenous Language Revitalization

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education Teacher Education program to enhance the student learning experience through, but not limited to, field schools, conferences and practicum placements. The award will also assist students with the costs of travel and fees associated with their activity. Preference will be given to students in spring practicum placements.

Application forms are available on the Faculty of Education's website and must be submitted by May 31st. Applicants must submit a letter (max 350 words) outlining how they will use this award to enhance their learning experience and a budget (template provided).

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Richard L. Williams Memorial Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to post-degree (Secondary) students who have a declared teaching area in Chemistry or Physics. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated involvement and/or leadership in the community and have an outstanding grade point average in their chemistry or physics courses. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Shirley Case Memorial Scholarship

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

An award of $1,000 is given annually to an undergraduate student registered in the Recreation and Health Education Co-operative Education program who has completed at least one work term.
Students are eligible for this award if:
(1) they did not receive payment for their work term or only received minimal compensation (e.g. accommodation, honorarium and/or travel expenses);
(2) they have engaged in a volunteer, unpaid commitment equal to the time of a work term (4 months).

  • Preference will be given to a student who has worked with at risk or under-resourced community members or organizations during their work term.
  • Application is made through the Recreation and Health Education Co-operative Education program and must be received by January 31st. A program committee will review all applications and nominate the recipient of the award.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Exercise Science, Physical & Health Education.

Thomas M. Hess Scholarship in Indigenous Language Revitalization*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate Indigenous students in either the Faculty of Humanities or the Faculty of Education and who are enrolled in Indigenous Language courses or an Indigenous language program. Part-time students are eligible for this award. 

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of a committee formed by the Department of Linguistics. The committee will include members from the Faculty of Education.

Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society Award*

One or more awards are given to transferring or continuing undergraduate students in any discipline who are conducting innovative and creative research in Japanese Canadian history, art, culture, and/or language. Applicants must submit the following to the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Humanities, by May 15:

  1. A statement of intent (maximum 500 words) outlining their proposed research and describing how their work contributes to, promotes and/or engages with Japanese Canadian history, art, culture, and/or language;
  2. a letter of support from the UVic faculty member(s) who will supervise the proposed research; and
  3. a CV and official UVic transcript.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Ada and Robert Le Grys Memorial Scholarship in Elementary Education*

The student must have demonstrated excellent teaching performance and the ability to use innovative approaches to teaching as documented in practica reports and have achieved first class standing in coursework.

Béts'ahchu Undergraduate Award in Indigenous Language Revitalization*

One or more awards are given to Canadian-born Indigenous undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education enrolled in the Certificate in Indigenous Language Proficiency (CILP), the Diploma in Indigenous Language Revitalization (DILR) or the Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization (BEd ILR) who are developing their own language proficiency and have a strong record of contributing to their/a language community through their work. Preference will be given to students from Northwest Territories.

Part-time students (minimum 3.0 units) are eligible for this award.

Cameron Memorial Trust Scholarship

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students who are continuing their studies in the Faculty of Education. In the case of an undergraduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

David F. Mahoney Memorial Award*

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate men students pursuing studies in elementary or middle years education in the Faculty of Education.  Students must demonstrate a commitment to or an involvement in innovation and child centered learning in public education. Preference will be given to students who have completed an undergraduate degree prior to being admitted to the education program.

Denton Memorial Book Prize*

A book prize is awarded to a student entering their final year elementary who has demonstrated excellence in student teaching and good general proficiency.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Bachelor of Education Elementary degree program on behalf of the Faculty of Education.

Derrick and Lytta Pereira Education*

A scholarship of at least $500 is awarded to a student entering or continuing in the Faculty of Education. Preference is given to a student from the City of Nanaimo.

Don Wright Scholarship in Music Education (Instrumental Music)*

This scholarship was established by Mr. Don Wright with the aim of strengthening the teaching of instrumental music in the schools. The scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time student in the Bachelor of Music (Music Education) degree program who has demonstrated a talent and achievement in instrumental music and teaching ability at either the elementary or secondary level.

Don Wright Scholarship in Music Education (Vocal and Choral Music)*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering the final year of their program in the Faculty of Education who shows an interest in and aptitude for the teaching of gifted children. If there are no eligible students, the scholarship will be awarded to students who show an interest in and aptitude for teaching 'exceptional' children.

EDSA Award

An award of $200 is given to a continuing student in the Faculty of Education who has demonstrated dedication to the Education Students' Association.

Faculty of Education Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship up to the amount of the recipient's tuition fees is awarded to an outstanding student in the Faculty of Education on the basis of previous academic performance and potential as a teacher.  In cases where equal scholastic ability has been demonstrated, financial need is considered.

Teachers' Federation to the student completing the final year of the Bachelor of Education Degree in secondary school teaching, and to the student completing the final year of the Bachelor of Education Degree in elementary school teaching, who, in the opinion of the Dean of the Faculty of Education and the director of the division (secondary or elementary) concerned is the outstanding student in the graduating class.

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate or graduate student studying elementary or secondary music education in the School of Music or the Faculty of Education. Approval of the undergraduate recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music or the Faculty of Education.

Approval of the graduate recipient will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music or the Faculty of Education. Awarding of the scholarships will alternate years between the School and the Faculty.

Orca Book Publishers Award in Indigenous Language Revitalization

One award is given to an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Education enrolled in either the Diploma in Indigenous Language Revitalization or the Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization who is developing their own language proficiency and has a strong record of contributing to their/a language community through their work.  Applications must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from a community group/member providing evidence of the contributions the applicant has made. Completed applications and reference letters must be submitted to the Faculty of Education office by May 31. Part-time students (enrolled in at least 4.5 units) are eligible for this award.

Orca Book Publishers Student Mobility Award in Teacher Education

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education Teacher Education program to enhance the student learning experience through, but not limited to, field schools, conferences and practicum placements. The award will also assist students with the costs of travel and fees associated with their activity. Preference will be given to students in spring practicum placements. Application forms are available on the Faculty of Education's website and must be submitted by December 1st. Applicants must submit a letter (max 350 words) outlining how they will use this award to enhance their learning experience and a budget (template provided).

Peter Beugger Memorial Scholarship in Elementary Science Education*

One or more scholarships are awarded to female students who have demonstrated a commitment to educating children about science in formal and informal settings, and who are in the elementary teacher education program, declaring an interest and aptitude in science education.
