Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Dr. Terence Gough Chemistry Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to an entering, transferring or continuing undergraduate student in the Department of Chemistry.

Gerhart B. Friedman Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded annually to a student entering year 2 or 3 of an Honours or Major program in the Departments of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics and Astronomy.

Jane Seaborne Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to women students in a major or honours program in Biology, Biochemistry and Microbiology, Chemistry, Earth and Ocean Sciences, or Physics and Astronomy. Preference will be given to students who are involved in intramural sports.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be approved upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry.

  • are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Chaney Award*

One or more scholarships are awarded to an academically outstanding entering, transferring or continuing undergraduate student in the Department of Chemistry.

Dr. Wilma Elias Undergraduate Scholarship in Chemistry*

Two or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding women undergraduate students majoring in Chemistry. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes. 

  • Unless stated otherwise, the application must be made through completion of the in-course scholarship application on UVic Online tools.
  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.
  • Some of the following awards may require application through the Department of Chemistry; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

 

Alexander and Glenda Kirk Award

Up to a maximum of three awards are given to students in a Major or Honours program in the Department of Chemistry who have a minimum 7.0/9.0 GPA. Preference is given to single parents or caregivers with demonstrated financial need and personal circumstances that prevent them from participating in co-op and/or work terms. If there are no eligible Chemistry students then the award may be given to students in a Major or Honours program in Biochemistry.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Departments of Chemistry or Biochemistry and Microbiology.

One or more awards are given to continuing or transferring undergraduate students in the Department of Chemistry. Preference is given to students with demonstrated financial need.d.

Corrina Ewan Memorial Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate or graduate students in Chemistry with superior lab skills who are planning to pursue a career in either secondary or post-secondary education. Application forms are available at the Department of Chemistry and must be submitted by May 31. 

Approval of the undergraduate recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry. Approval of the graduate recipients will be made by the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry.

Edythe Hembroff-Schleicher Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to undergraduate or graduate women students registered in pre-medicine disciplines, for example Biochemistry and Microbiology, Biology or Chemistry. Preference will be given to students who have stated an intention to continue on to medical school. Approval of the graduate recipients will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the appropriate departments.

Approval of the undergraduate recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards.

Martin and Diana Hocking Scholarship in Chemistry*

One or more undergraduate scholarships of $1,000 are awarded to academically outstanding students in the Department of Chemistry. Preference will be given, in descending order of priority, to a student who has:

a)     enrolled in the Chemistry Co-operative Program and/or

b)    demonstrated commitment to ongoing voluntary service in the community and/or

c)     demonstrated leadership by contributing to the social and academic environment within the Department of Chemistry.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendations of the Department of Chemistry.

B.W. Pearse Science Scholarship*

Four scholarships are awarded to third or fourth year students in an Honours or Majors program in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics and Physics and Astronomy.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics and Physics and Astronomy.

Charles Humphrey Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry*

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student proceeding to year 3 or 4 of an Honours or Major program.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry.

Chemistry Co-op Report Prize

One prize of $500, a second prize of $300 and a third prize of $200 are awarded at the end of each four month work term period to the students in the Chemistry Co-op Program who complete the three best Chemistry Co-op Work Term reports. The requirement that the prize recipients must return to the University of Victoria in the next regular session and must enroll in a full program does not apply to these prizes.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry in consultation with Chemistry Co-op Committee.

Chemistry Honours Scholarship

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding honours students entering third or fourth year in the Department of Chemistry.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry.

Chemistry Students' Society 2002 Alumni Award*

Value: Book | Number: 1

A book prize is awarded to a third or fourth year undergraduate student majoring in Chemistry. Students must have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in either a lecture or lab course or have shown the greatest improvement in either a lecture or a lab course. Graduating students are eligible.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry.

Dr. Terence Gough Chemistry Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to an academically outstanding entering, transferring or continuing undergraduate student in the Department of Chemistry.

Gerry Poulton Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in third or fourth year chemistry who are enrolled in the Honours or Major program and who have shown outstanding capabilities in organic chemistry.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry.

Hugh and Lilian Salmond Scholarship in Chemistry*

Two scholarships are awarded to students in an Honours or Major program in the Department of Chemistry who have devised or contributed to a concept or procedure which applies chemistry to the improvement of the health of the environment or of its inhabitants.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry.

Hugh and Lilian Salmond Scholarship in Chemistry of the Environment*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A scholarship is awarded to a student who combines an Honours or Major in Chemistry with an Honours, Major or Minor in another discipline, and who has demonstrated an interest in the health of the environment or of its inhabitants.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry.

John F. Reeves Memorial Award*

An award is offered to the student in the Chemistry Coop Program who, during a work term, is judged to have made the most outstanding contribution to the student's employer in the field of Chemistry. The recipient of the award should clearly have demonstrated some distinction in their work term performance. Candidates must be nominated for the award by their employer and the nominations will be assessed by a committee composed of three members of the Chemistry Department. Students are not required to return to UVic in the next Winter Session in full-time studies to receive the award. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry.

Karel Hartman Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a promising and deserving student in the Department of Chemistry who demonstrates interest in the area of analytical or instrumental chemistry.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry.

 

Mohamed and Prabha Ibrahim Undergraduate Scholarship in Chemistry*

One or more scholarships of at least $2,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Department of Chemistry.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry.

Norah and Calvin Banks Chemistry Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student entering 3rd year in a Major or Honours program in the Department of Chemistry.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Chemistry.

Stephen A. Ryce Memorial Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in third year Chemistry who plans to complete a degree in Chemistry at the University of Victoria. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Awards Committee of the Department of Chemistry.

The award is in memory of Dr. Stephen A. Ryce who was a member of the Chemistry Department for many years.
