Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship.

Recipients will be approved upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Costco Canada Undergraduate Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students from Greater Victoria who are entering or continuing into second or third year in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business and who have demonstrated financial need.

Dr. J. Donald Rowlatt Entrance Scholarship

A scholarship is awarded to a BC secondary school student entering first year at the University of Victoria and who has been granted admission to the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business. Preference will be given to an aboriginal student.

Judy Zhu and James Thom Business and Entrepreneurship Award

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student entering the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business directly from a public high school in BC who is the first in their immediate family to attend a post-secondary institution or is an immigrant, and who has an interest in pursuing entrepreneurship as a career. Applicants must submit an essay (maximum 500 words) describing why they are interested in being an entrepreneur.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Peninsula Co-op Pat Fafard Entrance Award

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student pursuing a degree at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who has contributed to their community and/or school in an outstanding way through volunteer or extra-curricular activities. The recipient must be a Peninsula Co-op member or the immediate family of a member. Immediate family of the student includes parents, step-parents, guardians, siblings, grandparents, uncles and aunts. Students and immediate family must have had active membership prior to September 1st of the previous year and must currently be in good standing with Peninsula Co-op. The recipient must be enrolled full-time at UVic and must attend UVic within the same year as their secondary school graduation.

Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society Award*

One or more awards are given to transferring or continuing undergraduate students in any discipline who are conducting innovative and creative research in Japanese Canadian history, art, culture, and/or language. Applicants must submit the following to the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Humanities, by May 15:

  1. A statement of intent (maximum 500 words) outlining their proposed research and describing how their work contributes to, promotes and/or engages with Japanese Canadian history, art, culture, and/or language;
  2. a letter of support from the UVic faculty member(s) who will supervise the proposed research; and
  3. a CV and official UVic transcript.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

First West Credit Union Launi Skinner Indigenous Scholarship

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding Indigenous undergraduate students entering or continuing in the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business. Part-time students (minimum 6.0 units) and graduating students are eligible for this scholarship. Selection of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Jeffrey Mallett Leadership Award*

An award is given to an entering or continuing undergraduate student in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who can demonstrate involvement in community or campus organizations. Preference will be given to a student on a Vikes varsity team. Graduating and part-time students (a minimum of 6.0 units) are eligible for this award.

Peter B. Gustavson School of Business Entrance Tuition Scholarship

Scholarships are awarded to students entering the Bachelor of Commerce Core Program. Scholarships are awarded based on the 30-unit GPA used by the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Peter B. Gustavson School of Business Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship*

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Bill Buckwold / Jennifer Richardson Award*

An award is given to a BCom or MBA graduating student who has demonstrated a substantial improvement and who has overcome a significant challenge to achieve their educational goal. Applicants must submit a cover letter and resume to the BCom Student Services office (BEC 283) either in person or by email by April 30.

If an undergraduate student, selection will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards and if a graduate student, selection will be made by the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee both upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

BMO Alliance for Women in Business Award

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

One award of $1,000 is given to an undergraduate student who identifies as a woman, who is continuing in the Bachelor of Commerce program at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business and who has paid or volunteer experience in ‘lifting the women up’ in her community. This could include, but not be limited to: work at transition houses, friendship centres or events focused on women’s health or economic status. Applicants must submit a statement (maximum 300 words) describing their paid or volunteer work. Preference is for an Indigenous student. Graduating and part-time students (registered in a minimum of 6.0 units for credit in two terms) are eligible for this award. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Canadian National Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students enrolled in either the International Business specialization or the Entrepreneurship specialization. Preference is given to students from the Kitimat-Stikine, Stikine, Bulkely-Nechako areas, the Cariboo, the Okanagan-Similkameen, Central Okanagan and North Okanagan regions. Students must apply to the School of Business by April 30. This scholarship may be awarded to a graduating student.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Chris Markoff Memorial Award

Value: $500 | Number: 1

An award of $500 is given to a fourth year student in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business. This student should demonstrate, through a resume, a keen appreciation for the outdoors and a record of outdoor pursuits. Preference will be given to a Canadian student who is involved in the Commerce Cultural Liaison Program (CCLP) and who has taken the time and effort to mentor foreign students at the University. This award may be given to a graduating student.

Resume to be submitted to the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business by April 30.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Commerce Student Society Community Engagement Award

Value: $1,000 | Number: 3

Three awards of $1,000 each are given to undergraduate Bachelor of Commerce students who are active volunteers in one or more campus-based activities focusing on equity, diversity and inclusion and have encouraged others to engage in this activity. As the intent of this award is to recognize an individual who is volunteering their time in support of activities focused on equity, diversity and inclusion, course-related volunteer or paid work will not be counted toward eligibility.

Applicants must submit a letter (maximum 500 words) outlining these activities and how they have shared this knowledge with the Peter B. Gustavson community to the BCom Student Services office (BEC 283) or by email (bcomasst@uvic.ca) by May 15. Graduating students are eligible for this award.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Costco Canada Undergraduate Scholarship*

CPA Education Foundation Diversity Award

One award of $2,500 is given to an undergraduate student enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who demonstrates financial need and who intends to take the CPA exam. First preference is for Indigenous students.  Second preference is for members of other groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity, including, but not limited to:

  • members of groups that commonly experience discrimination due to race, ancestry, colour, religion and/or spiritual beliefs or place of origin;
  • persons with visible and/or invisible (physical and/or mental) disabilities;
  • persons who identify as women; and
  • persons of marginalized sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

CPA Education Foundation Inclusion Award

One award of $2,500 is given to a woman undergraduate student enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who demonstrates financial need and who intends to take the CPA exam. Preference is for members of groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity, including, but not limited to,

  • First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples and all other Indigenous peoples;
  • members of groups that commonly experience discrimination due to race, ancestry, colour, religion and/or spiritual beliefs or place of origin;
  • persons with visible and/or invisible (physical and/or mental) disabilities; and
  • persons of marginalized sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Dr. Frank Parnell Memorial Award

Two awards of at least $1,000 each are given to Canadian-born Indigenous undergraduate students entering second or third year. Preference will be given to students who were born in and/or graduated from a high school (or equivalent e.g. home school, distance education etc.) in Northern British Columbia (north of latitude 53.92). Further preference will be given to students in the Bachelor of Commerce program at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business. Students with a GPA of 4.0/9.0 and above are eligible. Part-time students (minimum 3.0 units per term) are eligible.

Eunice Lowe Award for Entrepreneurship Studies*

One or more awards of at least $1,000 each are given to third or fourth year Bachelor of Commerce students in the entrepreneurship specialization at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who are facing financial or personal hardship.

Applicants must submit a personal statement (maximum 500 words) that outlines their financial or personal challenges and how they have overcome, or are currently overcoming, these challenges and also speaks to their academic and career goals. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need. Graduating students and part-time students (minimum 6.0 units) are eligible for this award.

Applications must be submitted through the online application via Online Tools under Student Awards and Financial Aid by May 31.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Graeme Jackson Award

An award is given to a fourth year undergraduate student in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who demonstrates a strong entrepreneurial spirit. The recipient must have completed an international exchange with one of the business school's recognized international exchange partners.

The recipient is selected based on nominations received from fellow students, faculty and/or staff. Nomination letters (maximum 500 words) must include or provide examples of:

  1. where and when the nominee went on their international exchange;
  2. how the nominee has made meaningful connections during their time at UVic.
  3. how the nominee demonstrates a passion for life in areas such as work experience, community involvement and/or family;
  4. when the nominee helped to positively impact other students; and
  5. how the nominee demonstrates a strong entrepreneurial spirit.
Applicants must also submit a brief personal statement (max 500 words) that outlines the above nomination criteria. Both the nomination letter and the personal statement must be submitted to the Administrative Director of the Bachelor of Commerce program by May 31. Graduating students are eligible for this award. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Gustavson School of Business.

 

Harold G. Craven Scholarship*

One or more scholarships of not less than $1,000 are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate 4th year students in the Department of Economics or the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who intend to pursue a career as a Chartered Accountant. Scholarships may be awarded to graduating students.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Economics or the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Henry and Marian Thiel International Business Award*

One or more awards of at least $1,500 each will be given to academically outstanding undergraduate students who have chosen to specialize in International Business in the Bachelor of Commerce program at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business. Graduating students are eligible to receive this award.

Students must submit a maximum 500 word essay that outlines:
• why they are pursuing the International Business specialization;
• their career ambitions and goals;
• what they have accomplished to-date that demonstrates their interest in International Business (e.g. international exchange, international co-op placement, involvement in clubs, volunteerism, leadership etc.); and
• why the funds are needed to meet financial need.

Applications must be submitted by July 15 to the Bachelor of Commerce Office in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Hoelscher Family Award

John H. Rennie Scholarship in Business*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students continuing in the Bachelor of Commerce program who have demonstrated financial need. Graduating students and part-time students (registered in a minimum of 6.0 units for credit in two terms) are eligible.

Approval of the recipient(s) is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Lee Hayes Award*

An award is given to an undergraduate student in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who demonstrates good work habits and organizational skills and has a GPA lower than 7.0. Applicants must submit a letter (maximum 1,000 words) to the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business by April 30 detailing their commitment to their educational and career goals.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Note:  The donors have requested that the student receiving this award is not to have grades of A- or above. Students are also to visibly demonstrate that they are doing everything possible through rigorous studying to reach his or her goals and must have good work habits and organizational skills.

Malcolm Manson Memorial Award*

An award is given to an undergraduate student in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who is attending a university in China on exchange and/or completing an internship in China. Students must submit a cover letter with a 500 word essay expressing their passion and interest in China and outlining how they anticipate the China experience will benefit them.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Mark Krasnick Leadership Award*

One or more awards are given to third or fourth year First Nations students in the Faculty of Human & Social Development, the Faculty of Law or the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business, who demonstrates leadership in either the First Nations community or within the Faculty. Preference will be given to a British Columbia resident.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Office of Indigenous Affairs.

Michaela Tokarski Entrepreneurship Award*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate Bachelor of Commerce students in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who are completing an entrepreneurial specialization or completing an entrepreneurial work term. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business. This award may go to graduating students.

Murray and Lynda Farmer Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding third or fourth year students in the Bachelor of Commerce program who demonstrate dedication to community organizations and have a strong interest in business ethics and social responsibility. Students must have completed or be enrolled in one or more courses related to the study of ethics or social responsibility.

Applications together with a 500 word essay on business ethics, personal goals and community involvement must be submitted to the BCom Student Services office (BEC 283) or by email (bcomasst@uvic.ca) by April 30. Scholarships may be awarded to graduating students.

Approval of the recipients will be made with the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Oliver Prentice Memorial - Saanich Rotary Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to a student of outstanding merit who is planning a business career and is continuing studies at a recognized university or is articled to a Certified Professional Accountant. The scholarship may be awarded to a graduating student.

Pooni Family Award in Business

An award of $1,000 is given to an academically outstanding undergraduate student continuing in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who demonstrates volunteer community involvement. Applicants must submit a statement (max 350 words) describing their community involvement. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Rose Won Lau Business Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to a Bachelor of Commerce student participating in an academic exchange program and/or co-op work placement in China for the upcoming summer or winter session. Selection of the student is based on the submission of a resume and an essay demonstrating the student's involvement in sports, extra-curricular activities or community contributions and stating how the scholarship will be of assistance in completing the co-op term or exchange, and on academic merit. Preference will be given to women students of Chinese ancestry.

A cover letter can be used as the application form and must be returned with a resumé and an essay to the BCom Student Services office (BEC 283) or by email (bcomasst@uvic.ca) by April 30th.

Stephen W. Long Award in Business

One award of $3,500 is given to a woman Bachelor of Commerce student entering second year at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business. Preference is for students with demonstrated financial need. Students with a GPA of 5.0/9.0 and above are eligible.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Sybil Verch Woman in Business Award

Value: $2,500 | Number: 1

An award of $2,500 is awarded to an outstanding woman student in the Bachelor of Commerce program at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who has completed the required core courses and will be entering fourth year. First preference will be given to a student who has demonstrated an interest in entering a career in finance. Second preference will be given to a student with demonstrated financial need. 

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Thomas (Bill) Orr Scholarship in Business*

One or more scholarships are awarded to students in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business. Eligible students must be involved in university life, such as athletics and/or clubs or campus organizations.

Application: A cover letter can be used as an application form and must be returned with a resume or list of community/campus involvement to the Gustavson School of Business, BCom Program Office (BEC 283) by April 30.

UVic Business Class of 2009 Award

Vancouver Security Traders Association (VSTA) Finance Award

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students continuing in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who have an interest in pursuing a career in the financial industry. Students must be enrolled in, or have taken, the Applied Investment Management (AIMC) course. Preference is given to students who are members of groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity including, but not limited to,
▪ First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, and all other Indigenous peoples;
▪ members of groups that commonly experience discrimination due to race, ancestry, colour, religion and/or spiritual beliefs, or place of origin;

An award is given to a third or fourth year Bachelor of Commerce student in the entrepreneurship specialization with demonstrated financial need. Preference is for students who are members of groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity, including, but not limited to:

  • members of groups that commonly experience discrimination due to race, ancestry, colour, religion and/or spiritual beliefs, or place of origin;
  • persons with visible and/or invisible (physical and/or mental) disabilities; and
  • persons of marginalized sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business. This award may go to graduating students.

Victoria Chartered Accountants Association Legacy Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Commerce program who are intending to pursue a Chartered Professional Accountant designation.

Albert Hung Chao Hong Scholarship in International Business and Entrepreneurship*

Athenic Entrepreneurship Award

An award of $5000 is given to an undergraduate or graduate student, or shared between two students working as a team, who won the annual Peter B. Gustavson School of Business Start-up Competition in the same year. Graduating students are eligible for this award.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made either by the Senate Committee on Awards or the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Bank of Montreal Scholarship

Two scholarships of $1,000 each are awarded to students entering year 4 of the Bachelor of Commerce program. Preference is given to students who show a strong potential for a career in a financial institution.

Coast Capital Savings Entrepreneurship Scholarship

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding fourth year undergraduate students undertaking the entrepreneurial specialization in the Bachelor of Commerce program at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

David Ritchie Business Grant*

One or more grants will be awarded annually to either undergraduate students in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who are enrolled in a minimum of 1.5 units in one term or graduate students enrolled in the MBA or MGB program. Grants will be valued in the amount equaling a student's tuition and fees. Additional funds may be awarded to support living costs and/or expenses over and above a student’s tuition and fees. Grant applicants must be a recipient of the Horatio Alger Scholarship and in good standing with the committee and approved by the UVic Peter B. Gustavson School of Business. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Jeffrey Mallett Leadership Award*

An award is given to an entering or continuing undergraduate student in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who can demonstrate involvement in community or campus organizations. Preference will be given to a student on a Vikes varsity team. Graduating and part-time students (a minimum of 6.0 units) are eligible for this award.

Kyle McMillan Award*

An award is given to a student in year 3 of the BCom program in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business. Selection of the recipient will be based on fall class evaluations and any or all of the following criteria: athletics, leadership, academic, public speaking. Nominations will be accepted from students and faculty by the BCom Associate Director on or before December 15th of each year.

Madam Soong Ching Ling Memorial Scholarship*

Microserve Award in Business, Management Information Systems

 One award of at least $1,000 is given to an undergraduate student enrolled in either the Bachelor of Commerce program or the Department of Computer Science. Applicants must submit a personal statement (maximum 500 words) that speaks to their passion for Information Systems and/or Management and Technology, strong work ethic, a positive attitude and being an exemplary team player. Applications may also outline, in the statement, any personal and/or financial challenges and how they overcame or are currently overcoming them.
Preference will be given to students with historical and/or current barriers to equity, including, but not limited to:
• First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples, and all other Indigenous peoples;
• members of groups that commonly experience discrimination due to race, ancestry, colour, religion and/or spiritual beliefs, or place of origin;
• persons with visible and/or invisible (physical and/or mental) disabilities;
• persons who identify as women; and
• persons of marginalized sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions.
The award will rotate between the School of Business and the Department of Computer Science, starting with Computer Science. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of either the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business or the Department of Computer Science.

Peter B. Gustavson School of Business Medal for Academic Excellence

A number of scholarships are awarded to students continuing in the Bachelor of Commerce program. Scholarships are based on the GPA in the required 300-level commerce courses. A student must have completed all 300-level core commerce courses to be eligible for this award.

Tim Price Scholarship in Entrepreneurship*

Victoria B4B Entrepreneurship Award

One award of $1,000 to be given to a graduating Bachelor of Commerce student from the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who has completed the Entrepreneurship Specialization, demonstrates a strong interest in entrepreneurship and/or small business and has launched, or wishes to launch, a business in the Greater Victoria Area. Students will be nominated by the Entrepreneurship professors in their final semester (May - August).

The nomination and selection will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • venture viability;
  • likelihood of venture launch;
  • student or student team capability and commitment to the venture, and;
  • academic performance in the Bachelor of Commerce Entrepreneurship Specialization.

Victoria Real Estate Board Past Presidents Scholarship

Weston Family Scholarship in Hotel and Restaurant Management*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate Bachelor of Commerce students who are either entering the third year from an approved two-year Canadian Hospitality Diploma program or who are entering their fourth year specializing in Service Management. Eligible students must also be Canadian citizens.

Working for a Better World Award

One or more awards, of up to $8,000 each, will be given to undergraduate students in the Bachelor of Commerce program who have secured an approved Working for a Better World designated co-op term (Fall, Spring or Summer). The Working for a Better World award is intended to create opportunities for students to complete a co-op term with an organization that is contributing to social and/or environmental impact and who would normally be unable to fund the co-op through other means. The position must involve a high degree of social and/or environmental impact and the student must utilize their business knowledge and acumen to add value to the organization. Part-time co-ops and part-time students (registered in a minimum of 4.5 units) are eligible for this opportunity.

Recipients travelling to an international location for the co-op opportunity may be eligible for up to $2,000 in additional funding to assist with travel expenses. Students who apply to a Working for a Better World Co-op opportunity will automatically be considered for this award. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

Successful recipients must be willing to take part in the Working for a Better World Scholars network and be featured in the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business’ promotional material (photo and story).
