Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Denis and Pat Protti Bursary*

One or more bursaries are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students entering or continuing in the School of Health Information Science.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Health Information Science.

The scholarships below:

  • require an online application via Online tools submitted between February 15 - April 30, unless otherwise stated in the Terms of Awards.
  • are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Dr. Mowafa Househ Entrance Scholarship

Value: $500 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $500 is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student entering the School of Health Information Science from a British Columbia secondary school or college. Preference will be given to a student from Northern British Columbia (the area from Prince George north, including Prince George and Haida Gwaii). The scholarship will be awarded every other year.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Health Information Science.

Next disbursal September 2023.

Doreen Sutherland Undergraduate Award for Permanent Residents, Protected Persons and Refugee Women in Health Information Science*

One or more awards are given to entering or continuing women undergraduate students in the School of Health Information Science. Preference will be given in the following order:
1. students who have protected person or refugee status, with preference for students who have financial need
2. students who have Canadian permanent resident status, with preference for students who have financial need
3. all other students, with preference for students who have financial need
Applicants meeting preference #1 must submit a letter from the Manager, International Student Advising that confirms protected person or refugee status.

Jack Howard Jackson Memorial Award

One or more awards are given to entering, continuing or transferring undergraduate Indigenous students with Canadian citizenship who have demonstrated financial need and who are enrolled in any of the following: the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, School of Nursing, School of Health Information Science or the Department of Psychology.

Sheila Ryan and Eileen Ryan Award in Health Information Science*

One or more awards are given to entering or continuing undergraduate or graduate students in the School of Health Information Science, with preference to students who have demonstrated financial need. Undergraduate students will apply through the online application via Online tools. Graduate student applications must be submitted to the School of Health Information Science.

Approval of the undergraduate recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Health Information Sciences. Approval of graduate recipient(s) will be made by the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Health and Information Science.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

One or more scholarships of $1,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding entering or continuing undergraduate students in the Health Information Science program.

Steven A. Huesing Memorial Entrance Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering the School of Health Information Science.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Health Information Science.

Applications are required for in-course scholarships listed in this section. These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes. 

  • Unless stated otherwise, the application must be made through completion of the in-course scholarship application on UVic Online tools.
  • The deadline, unless stated otherwise, is May 31.
  • Some of the following awards may require application through the School of Health Information Science; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

Cindy Kung Memorial Award for Women in Health Information Science

One or more awards are given to women undergraduate students continuing in the School of Health Information Science with a preference for students with demonstrated financial need.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the nomination of the School of Health and Information Science.

Dr. Ken and Barbara Thornton Memorial Award*

An award is given to one or more undergraduate students enrolled in the School of Health Information Science who have been full-time residents of British Columbia for the preceding two years. Applications and further information can be obtained from the School of Health Information Science. Applications must be submitted by June 30.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Health Information Science.

James H. Coward Award*

An award is given to an undergraduate student in the School of Health Information Science to assist with expenses associated with participating in a co-op work term. Preference will be given to a student taking an international work term. Applications and further information can be obtained from the School of Health Information Science. Applications must be submitted by June 30th to the School of Health Information Science.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Health Information Science.

Michael Miller Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to graduate students and/or undergraduate students entering 3rd or 4th year in the School of Health Information Science. The application process includes the submission of a short essay on manic depression (bipolar disorder). Application forms may be obtained in the School of Health Information Science. Completed forms must be submitted to the School of Health Information Science by June 30th.

In the case of an undergraduate award, selection of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Health Information Science. In the case of a graduate award, selection will be made by the Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Health Information Science.

Health Information Science Scholarship

One or more scholarships of $1,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding entering or continuing undergraduate students in the Health Information Science program.

Mrs. Annie Greskiw Scholarship in Health Information Science*

Two scholarships are awarded to outstanding students proceeding to year 3 or 4 of the Health Information Science Program.
