Campus is open on Friday, Jan. 19

Update Jan. 19 at 6:15 am:

Conditions on campus have improved overnight and, as a result, campus is open on Friday, Jan. 19.

CARSA and McKinnon will open at 8 a.m. Most other units are operating with their regular hours. Please check individual unit websites for details. If you're having trouble accessing something on campus, please call campus security for assistance.

Rain has been falling for most of the night and Environment Canada forecasts that the temperature will continue to rise throughout the day. BC Transit expects most routes to UVic to be operational today.

Please plan ahead and be prepared for wet and wintery conditions, particularly on side roads. Grounds crews have worked hard to clear pathways and roads on campus, but some areas may be slippery or slushy as the snow melts.

Thank you again for your understanding and flexibility during these evolving weather conditions.

Update Jan. 18 at 5:10 pm:

UVic is closely monitoring Environment Canada forecasts for this evening and into tomorrow. At this time, snow is falling in many parts of Greater Victoria, then expected to turn to rain after midnight, with temperatures rising.

Based on this information and early morning on-campus assessments tomorrow, we will make a decision before 7 a.m. on whether the campus will open at its regular time or if we need to delay opening. Please check uvic.ca for updates.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding throughout this dynamic weather.

Update Jan. 18 at 12:00 pm:

Campus closed Jan. 18 at 1 p.m.

Unfortunately, weather and road conditions have deteriorated and more snow is forecasted. Campus will close today as of 1 p.m.

We work hard to keep campus open in order to deliver the high-quality, in-person education our students expect. The decision to open or close campus during winter weather conditions is complex and based on the best information we have available at the time. Unfortunately, today’s weather forecast changed unexpectedly mid-morning and we’ve had to respond by closing campus midday.

We know a midday closure is challenging. Thank you to everyone for your understanding and flexibility and to Facilities Management, Campus Security, Food Services and other staff who have worked so hard to open our campus safely.

In-person activities should conclude by 1 p.m., with the exception of on-campus services necessary for the continued operation and safety of campus. Please take your time and wind down your in-person activities. Online classes and administrative activities being conducted remotely will continue.

During a campus closure, UVic instructors have the option of cancelling, rescheduling or moving their classes online. Subject to approval from their department Chair/Director, instructors will reschedule or make alternate arrangements for mid-term examinations. Instructors are responsible for communicating with their students about their plans regarding classes during the closure. Reach out to your instructors directly if you have questions about how weather impacts your class.

We will provide an update by 6 p.m. about the status of campus for tomorrow.

Update Jan. 18 at 6:00 am:

Campus is open on Thursday, Jan. 18. Please plan ahead, allow extra time, wear appropriate clothing and footwear and be prepared for snowy and icy conditions.

Update Jan. 17 at 4:45 pm:

Weather and road conditions are improving! Thank you to our Facilities Management and Campus Security teams who worked so hard to address winter conditions on campus today.

We expect to re-open our campus on Thursday, Jan. 18. We'll share updates at uvic.ca if our plans to re-open change due to evolving conditions.

CARSA and McKinnon will open at 8 am on Jan. 18. Plan ahead and be safe! Check individual unit websites for their hours of operation.

Updated Jan. 17 at 11:00 am:

Campus closed Jan 17 due to weather conditions

Due to challenging weather conditions and disrupted transportation in the region, the UVic campus closed today at 12:30 p.m.

A campus closure due to snow is not an emergency and an immediate departure from campus is not required. We encourage everyone on campus to take their time and wind down their in-person activities. Online classes and administrative activities being conducted remotely will continue.

During a campus closure academic and administrative functions that are available remotely will continue. The closure only applies to those activities that must occur on the physical campus.

Please stay safe! Plan ahead, allow extra time, wear appropriate clothing and footwear and be prepared for snowy and icy conditions.

We are actively monitoring weather conditions to determine when it is safe to reopen campus. UVic crews are working to address slippery conditions in order of priority.

It's never an easy decision to adjust our campus hours based on road conditions. We make the best decision we can based on the information available at the time. Thanks to everyone who made an effort to come to campus and to staff who worked so hard to open our campus safely this morning. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as this situation unfolded today.

If you have questions about how this campus closure impacts you, please contact your instructor or supervisor.
