Campus Bike Centre expands UVic cycling facilities

The University of Victoria will unveil the new indoor Campus Bike Centre on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Located at the west end of the University Centre parkade, the unique facility offers more than 230 covered bicycle parking spots, including bike lockers and rack parking, as well as equipment lockers and an expanded work space for the SPOKES bicycle program.

“The university is proud to be opening this state-of-the-art indoor facility for cyclists,” says Vice-President Finance and Operations Gayle Gorrill. “As a legacy project of UVic’s 50th anniversary, this project reflects the university’s strong commitment to sustainability, and sustainable transportation options.”

The covered bike parking area will be available to employees, students and community members any time. There are 46 individual bike lockers and 48 equipment lockers available for monthly rental to UVic staff, faculty and students only. The centre was built on the former site of 28 vehicle parking stalls, and was funded through vehicle parking revenues.

“The goal of the university’s Transportation Demand Management program is to encourage students, employees and visitors to leave their cars at home and travel to campus via more sustainable modes,” says Neil Connelly, director of campus planning and sustainability. “The Campus Bike Centre is an important component of the university’s ongoing support for cycling as a convenient, safe and economical transportation alternative.”

Approximately eight per cent of all travellers to campus are cyclists, representing a total of 4,675 bicycle trips to and from UVic on an average fall weekday.

Members of the media are invited to attend the opening ceremony and unveiling of the 50th anniversary legacy plaque, Tuesday, Nov. 19 at noon. Speakers include Vice-President Finance and Operations Gayle Gorrill and Director of Campus Planning and Sustainability Neil Connelly.

Access to the Campus Bike Centre is from the pathway between the University Centre and Business and Economics buildings. Tours of the centre will be available, as well as free bike tune-ups and light refreshments.
