Backgrounder: Campus Bike Centre expands UVic cycling facilities

The Campus Bike Centre is UVic’s first purpose-built indoor facility for bicycle parking and gear storage. A legacy project of the university’s 50th anniversary, the centre is located on the lower level of the University Centre.

Key features include:

  • 234 new bicycle parking spaces, including 46 individual bicycle lockers for rent to UVic students, staff and faculty. Each locker has enough room for a bicycle plus cycling gear.
  • 64 equipment lockers for rent to UVic students and employees. Each locker has room for cycling gear.
  • Expanded space for the SPOKES bicycle program. SPOKES is a unique volunteer-run bicycle shop and rental program, where volunteers give new life to old bikes and provide students, faculty and staff with access to affordable and active transportation, quick repairs and basic bike accessories.

Approximately eight per cent of all travel to campus is by bicycle, with a weekday average of 4,675 trips per day to and from campus. (Source: 2012 Campus Traffic Survey)

Other cycling amenities on the UVic campus include:

  • More than 2,000 outdoor bike parking spaces, including bicycle shelters
  • Showers and change rooms in 10 campus buildings
  • 96 outdoor bicycle lockers available for rent to students, faculty and staff
  • Lockers in most classroom buildings, large enough to hold cycling gear, available for rent
  • Self-serve bike repair kiosk, the “Bike Kitchen,” gives cyclists access to bike stands, compressed air and basic tools for quick repairs. Toolkits are also available for loan to students and staff.
  • Four electric bike charging stations
  • Bike engraving and registration through Campus Security Services
  • Free bike locks for short-term loan from the Library Loan Desk
