FOXY peer leader thrilled by Arctic Inspiration award

Makenzie Zouboules, third-year UVic honours political science and writing co-op student, is something of a celebrity in her hometown of Yellowknife, NWT. Last month, along with FOXY co-founders Candice Lys and Nancy MacNeill, Zouboules accepted a $1-million Arctic Inspiration Prize for their work with northern youth. Originally part of Lys’ PhD dissertation on public health promotion, FOXY (Fostering Open eXpression among Youth) is a participatory research project aimed at talking with young people about sexual health, sexuality and relationships across the three northern Canadian territories.

Partnership recognized for reductions in bullying

As co-creator of the anti-bullying program, WITS, (Walk Away, Ignore, Talk it Out, Seek Help) Dr. Bonnie Leadbeater has worked tirelessly with community partners, police officers, school staff and administrators, and parents to protect children from peer violence and victimization. On December 2, 2013 Leadbeater was presented with the CIHR Partnership Award by the Governor General of Canada in recognition of her leadership of the WITS programs.

Science Venture Pro-D kids’ camp May 17

Are you looking for a great program on campus for your child on the next Pro-D Day (Friday, May 17)? UVic has created a Science Venture Pro-D Day Pilot Program to provide on-site programming for school-aged children of UVic staff, faculty and students. From 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. children will experience a taste of the university and gain a better understanding of their parents’ workplace. Writing student named Youth Poet Laureate

January 9, 2013 - The Ring

Department of Writing student Aysia Law has been named the City of Victoria’s inaugural Youth Poet Laureate—a first not only for Victoria, but also in Canada. Law, who won UVic’s 2011 Diversity Writing Contest, will be performing her work at a number of events throughout 2013 and receives a $1,500 honorarium, plus $1,000 to develop and complete a major project that engages youth through poetry. “She's such a passionate and dedicated writer with a great sense of humour and a natural instinct for language,” say Lee Henderson, one of Law’s writing professors. “She’s the perfect choice as our first public voice for the city's young poets.” Law will perform the first poem in her new position for Victoria City Council at City Hall on Jan.17.
