Area of expertise

Roland has served as both President and Executive Director of the International Society for Industrial Ecology. He is a past member of the (UK) Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution and the Science Advisory Council of the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. He was a founding member of the UK Eco-labelling Board. In 2004-5, he acted as Expert Adviser to a House of Lords Select Committee enquiry into energy efficiency. In 2012-14, he served as Review Editor and Chapter Author for the Industry chapter of Working Group III (Mitigation) of the 5th Assessment Report (AR5) of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). His current research concerns clean energy systems, particularly using biomass, and modelling of stocks and flows in the economy to develop thinking beyond the “circular economy” model. He was a co-editor, with Angela Druckman, of “Taking Stock of Industrial Ecology” (Springer, 2016). His next book will be “Living Well on a Finite Planet”, co-authored with a multidisciplinary team: George Martin (sociologist), Simon Mair (economist) and Rosalind Malcolm (lawyer). It is due for publication by Springer in 2024.
