The Department of Greek and Roman Studies offers two different classical archaeological projects that you might want to consider joining. The Eastern Boeotia Archaeological Project takes place in central Greece and investigates an unexplored settlement dating primarily to the Mycenaean (ca. 1700-1150 BC) and Classical (6-4th c. BC) periods. The site is ancient Eleon and operated within the orbit of the major Greek city of Thebes.

The Ancient Ilduro Archaeological Project takes place in Spain, near the city of Barcelona, and includes the detailed excavation of three complex Roman Republican domestic spaces (150-75 BC) and an Early Imperial sanctuary (1-6 c. AD). The study of these spaces will reveal some of the economic, cultural and religious practices of the inhabitants of ancient Ilduro.

As a student volunteer, you will participate in all aspects of fieldwork, learning excavation techniques, recording methods and artifact analysis. This hands-on program (GRS 495 Archaeology Practicum) offers UVic credit equivalent to two semester-long courses. Space is limited and students must apply and be accepted to participate. The work is physically strenuous and challenging.
