Making a claim

The university has many different insurance policies with varying requirements, but one commonality among all of them is that the university provide immediate notice for the prompt investigation of a claim or an event that could give rise to a claim.

UVic property claims

To report a property loss please contact Campus Security at 250-721-7599.

When an incident (i.e., fire, water) occurs in a university-owned space, a team consisting of appropriate representatives from Campus Security, Occupational Health, Facilities Management and Risk Managment and Insurance will attend.

It should be noted that areas of the building may be temporarily shut off with respect to employee, student or public access to allow for the recovery process to occur in a safe manner.

• Risk managment & insurance will cover the cost to repair, rebuild or replace damanged equipment, furniture or supplies (whichever is less value).  Replacement will be with new materials of like kind and quality.  If a department wishes to upgrade the same piece of equipment, that cost would be at their own expense.
• All funds reimbursed to the department may only be used for the replacement or repair of the equipment or supplies that were declared in the claim.

Stolen equipment

To report stolen equipment (including equipment on loan to UVic) please contact Campus Security at 250-721-7599.

• Risk management & insurance will cover the cost to replace stolen UVic owned equipment (less the applicable deductible to the department).  Replacement will be with new materials of like kind and quality.  If a department wishes to upgrade the same piece of equipment, that cost would be at their own expense.

• If the university has accepted responsibility for third party equipment through a contract (i.e., it is on loan or leased to the university), UVic will also cover the cost to replace the equipment for the owner less the applicable department deductible.
• All funds reimbursed to the department may only be used for the replacement of the equipment declared in the claim.

Rental vehicles

To report damage to a rental vehicle please contact Campus Security at 250-721-7599.

• Risk management & insurance will work with the renter, the department and the rental agency to facilitate the claims process depending on the type of insurance that was applicable at the time of loss.

Injuries to students and visitors

All incidents where a person is injured at a UVic facility (i.e., a person slips and falls) or participating in a university activity (i.e., injured in a lab or out in the field) should be reported immediately to Campus Security at 250-721-7599.
