Foundational work

Preferential and limited hiring processes can be one part of a larger commitment to advancing equity, practicing inclusion and retaining diverse talent.

Before starting the process, have a check-in meeting with your leader(s) to discuss whether the position should be filled through a preferential and limited search. Leadership engagement and accountability ensures that you are supported to in the process. At the meeting, review whether your unit has a clear plan and allocated appropriate resources for ongoing action to advance equity and to create an inclusive environment for new hires.

  • Are there representation gaps within your unit? Are diverse identities well represented within the staff and faculty so your diverse student body feels like they belong?
  • Are there systemic barriers within your unit which prevent members from underrepresented groups to fully thrive?
  • Are there appropriate support resources to set the new hire up for success?
  • Have you reviewed UVic’s institutional plans including the Equity Action Plan, Indigenous Plan, and Accessibility Plan?
  • Do you have a list of supporting units/individuals/resources to consult?
  • Review the Preferential or Limited Hiring Policy for more details on the process.
