Winning UVic student teams advance to Western Engineering Competition

August 16, 2024

This summer, UVic ECS students competed at the University of Victoria Engineering Competition (UVEC), organised by the UVic Engineering and Computer Science Students’ Society (ECSS), where 58 participants competed in five different events: Programming, Junior Design, Re-Engineering, Consulting, and Innovative Design.

The specific challenges faced by the students ranged from designing a real-time media synchronization system, designing a device to launch beanbags into a cornhole target, re-engineering Victoria transit options, planning for B.C. clean energy's future, and creating a unique solution to the opioid crisis.

Judges from various industries and backgrounds provided students with valuable feedback on their ideas and projects.

“I'm proud of the challenges the competition leads devised, the record-high number of students participating in our summer UVEC, and the participants' success in completing awesome projects in a limited time,” said Matthew Curtis, VP Corporate from the UVic Engineering and Computer Science Students’ Society (ECSS) and third-year Software Engineering student. “Competing in UVEC is a fun day-long event and we received a lot of good feedback from competitors and judges.”

The winning teams will advance to the Western Engineering Competition (WEC) in January 2025 hosted at the University of Saskatchewan, where they will compete against teams from all over Western Canada.

“UVEC is so much fun to participate in and is open to any student in the ECS faculty. It can be a fun place to try something new and work as a team to create something with the potential of being able to move forward and compete against schools across western Canada,” explains Curtis. “Even if you don't win, you still can learn a lot from working on the problem and getting feedback from industry judges who want to see you do your best. For judges, it can be a great way to interact with passionate students and give back to Victoria's engineering and computer science community.”

Here is the list of winning teams:

Innovative Design: Deepkhushi Baidwan, Nicole Chan, Emily Murray, Ellie Walters

Consulting: Menoa Brennan, Jack Klobchar, Owen Pritchard, Amain Singh

Re-Engineering: Kiana Darrell, Logan Sewell

Junior Design: Abdhishay Murthy, Animish Murthy, Caleb Kuang, Lin

Programming: Katelyn Dhami, Malcolm Seyd, Kyle Stang, Max Thomson, Kyle Stang

The event was jointly sponsored by the UVSS, Engineers and Geoscientist of British Columbia (platinum sponsor), and Avalon Mechanical (bronze sponsor), making the event possible through their generosity. Every fall and summer term, the ECS student society organizes the UVic Engineering Competition, which consists of multiple engineering-related competitions that pits engineering undergraduate students in friendly competition against their peers, with an opportunity to move forward to regional and national competitions.

Congratulations to all of the participants! All of us at the UVic ECS Faculty wish our student teams the very best as they compete at the Western Engineering Competition (WEC) in January 2025!
