About

Hello! My name is Shelby and I am an advanced practicum counsellor here at the University of Victoria Student Wellness Centre. I use she/her pronouns and identify as a cisgender, able-bodied, white woman. I have Italian, English, and Metis heritage and have spent my life as an uninvited visitor on the unceded lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) and W̱ŚANÉC traditional territories. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Victoria (BA in psychology), and I am currently in my final year of the Master of Counselling program through City University. I like to spend my free time outdoors, which for me often looks like getting out for a run or meeting up with friends for a walk. When I have time to get away, I enjoy sailing with my partner and travelling.

Counselling approach

I am passionate about creating a non-judgmental and warm environment that fosters change, growth, and safety to share. I believe people are the experts of their own lives and that the therapeutic process should be one of collaboration with your needs and goals at its centre. I view wellness as consisting of biological, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects. I strive to understand the various systems at play in an individual’s life and how these systems impact an individual’s experience. I also strive to help individuals identify strengths and resources in their lives that they can draw on at times of challenge.

Some topics I am particularly interested in supporting people with are life transitions, feelings of anxiety, feelings of depression, grief and loss, self-compassion, and relationships. I am passionate about helping people find peace, balance, and healing in their lives and feel grateful to have this opportunity to bear witness to your stories, learning, and growth. I look forward to working together!
