Econ student excels at golf

December 02, 2021

Katie Martens

Katie Martens, a fifth year economics major, recently received (for the second time) the prestigious Provost Award. Martens is a student-athlete with UVic Vikes holding a spot on the golf team. She says being part of the team has been a huge highlight over the last five years.

“If it wasn’t for the golf team, I wouldn’t have gotten to travel and make incredible friends,” says Martens.

As a student-athlete, Martens says a valuable skill she has learned is time management. “It’s pretty busy trying to balance a full course load, athletics and competition, as well as a part-time job; but being so busy keeps me on top of everything, and I’ve learned to use my time more valuably, says Martens.”

The Provost Award, given out to the student with the highest overall GPA, receives a further $500 athletic financial award, for a total of $1,000 in support and is honoured again at the end of the year at the Celebration of Champions banquet in April.
