Each year, the American Association of Geographers (AAG) celebrates exemplary geographers who advance their field in meaningful ways.

The recipient of this year’s AAG Diversity and Inclusion Award is Dr. CindyAnn Rose-Redwood, an associate teaching professor in UVic’s Department of Geography. Rose-Redwood received the award for her consistent effort to advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the discipline of geography.

“I am honoured to receive the AAG Diversity and Inclusion Award this year. I appreciate this recognition of all the time and effort that I have put into incorporating the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion into my teaching and research as well as mentoring students from diverse backgrounds in striving to achieve their dreams,” says Rose-Redwood.

Besides her tireless service in teaching and service, Dr. Rose-Redwood actively promotes research on the inclusion of international students in higher education, fostering meaningful cross-cultural interaction, and stimulating diverse learning. She also holds the distinction as the founding committee chair of the Equity and Diversity Committee in UVic’s Department of Geography.

“As a racialized minority professor, I remain committed to advancing anti-racism in the academy regardless of whether I receive awards or recognition for my efforts; however, receiving this award reaffirms my commitment to making a difference in the lives of my students and supporting other faculty of colour as they face systemic barriers in higher education,” adds Rose-Redwood.
