Rachel Friedman, Banting Fellowship

October 17, 2023

Rachel Friedman

Congratulations, Rachel Friedman, a postdoctoral researcher in the Departments of Geography and Political Science.

"My Banting Fellowship is looking at the social and environmental impacts of imported food supply chains, and possible policy levers to reduce the impacts of these imports in Canada. I’m excited about this opportunity, as it is allowing me to broaden the focus of my research---which has mostly centred on the food producers in the tropics and sub-tropics---to consider the consumer country drivers and responsibilities for the environmental degradation and social injustices that arise along these supply chains. Everything we eat has an impact we don’t see, from the cup of coffee that starts off our mornings, to the piece of chocolate snuck in before bed. This research will further our understanding of what can be done to mitigate the impacts," says Friedman.

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country's economic, social, and research-based growth.
