Kirsten has worked in the field of emergency management for 10 years as both a volunteer and a professional. As an emergency manager, Kirsten works with a broad range of stakeholders to plan for, respond to and recover from emergencies. With 57 known hazards potentially impacting BC, ranging from floods, wildfires, landslides, extreme weather, earthquakes and tsunamis, the work is always engaging, collaborative and dynamic.

My geography degree really set the foundation for my career in emergency management. Learning about hazards, earth sciences and social geography provided a deeper understanding of the impacts of extreme events. In addition, I use skills in research, writing and communication daily in my work, all of which were emphasized during my time at the University of Victoria.
