Credentials

MA Economics 2022

Moein currently serves as an Economist with the Conference Board of Canada. In this role, he is able to work on several research projects in different areas. This variety in research area is both interesting and amplifying Moein’s understanding of Canadian economic landscapes. Moein primarily works with econometric modelling and comprehensive research in this role. Moein is grateful to be able to apply the skills and theory he learned during his MA studies at the University of Victoria to a value-driven research team.

While Moein was completing high school in Iran, he began to question the economic disparities within and between countries. Living in a country with abundant natural resources but where a number of people are struggling, motivated him to ask these questions. As an engineering undergraduate student, he realized that he would not be able to investigate and answer these questions with his current course of study. He completed his minor in economics and then applied for the master’s degree in economics at the University of Victoria to be able to further pursue these queries. During the period between the completion of his undergraduate degree and the start of his graduate studies, Moein prepared by reading Freakonomics, The Outliers, Nudge, Sapiens, and Political Order and Political Delay.

Victoria appealed to Moein not only for its serene landscapes but also for the robust co-op program that UVic offers. Moein completed a co-op with the Ministry of Forests and found this to be a bridge between the theoretical knowledge learned in the classroom and real world applications.  With many of UVic's professors being alumni of top-tier universities in Canada and the U.S., he was confident of being mentored by the best.

During Moein’s free time, he works to further explore his interest in behavioural economics. Courtesy of the free subscription to the Economist at his work, he can keep up to date with the latest articles. Moein also enjoys bouldering and strategizes the most efficient route to climb the wall.

To our current students, Moein’s advice is:

Just follow what you are passionate about. Other than that, it would be very nice if you continuously follow the news, listen to podcasts/reading articles, and wear an economist hat when it comes to looking at social trends.
