Fazila Mat is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at University of Victoria. Her research focuses on hybrid regimes and the role of transnational advocacy networks in promoting democracy in Turkey. Fazıla holds an MA degree in Humanities from the University of Milan and she has worked for over ten years as a journalist and commentator for Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso Transeuropa and other Italian and Swiss media covering Turkish politics, society and EU-Turkey relations.
Since 2014 she has also contributed to different research projects focused on Turkey, the EU and EU member states, including media freedom; hate speech and disinformation; the EU-Turkey refugee deal; academic freedom; memory politics, democracy and populism, political party financing in Italy and the transnational mobilization of Italian civil society.
