Carolina Carvalho is a researcher in participatory mapping and participatory GIS applied to urban planning and development. Currently, she is a visiting researcher and postdoctoral fellow at the Community Based Research Laboratory (CBRL), Department of Geography, at the University of Victoria, Canada. She is also a researcher at the Institute of Environment and Energy, of São Paulo University (USP), Brazil, and founder of the Comunidades Vivas - Mapeamento Participativo, an initiative that brings participatory mapping as a tool for urban life improvements, focusing on citizen engagement.

Dr Carvalho did a postdoc research using Participatory Geographic Information Systems (PGIS) applied to urban governance, at the Public Health Faculty (University of Sao Paulo) and Aalto University, Espoo, Finland.  Dr Carvalho has a DSc in Environmental Planning (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - UFRJ, Brazil), with a research period at the Royal Institute of Technology (Tekniska Kunliga högskolan - KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden. She also has an MSc in Remote Sensing and a BSc in Geology.
