Janice is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at the University of Victoria. Her Crossing Borders Commonwealth Scholar’s research project will look at the role of the South African Human Rights Commission and the Commission for Gender Equality in South Africa’s democratic transition. Her research examines how these two institutions seek to promote the implementation of South Africa’s Bill of Rights. It analyzes the South African Human Rights Commission and Commission for Gender Equality as alternative legal forums for rights adjudication, government oversight and accountability mechanisms, educational and advocacy institutions, and their role as international human and gender rights organizations.
