New Frontiers in Research Fund

On April 25, 2023, the Government of Canada released the results of the New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) 2022 Transformation and the 2022 Exploration competition.

The New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF) supports world-leading interdisciplinary, international, high-risk / high-reward, transformative and rapid-response Canadian-led research.


UVic researchers lead on 3 successful Exploration grants:

  • Project title: Cultivated meat production in zero gravity: Making burgers for astronauts.
    Co PIs: Mohsen Akbari, UVic mechanical Engineering and Fabio Rossi, UBC Biomedical Engineering
  • Project title: Implementing automated technologies for drug checking in response to the overdose crisis
    Co PIs: Dennis Hore, Chemistry, and Bruce Wallace, Social Work
  • Project title: Solving disk-planet interactions using deep learning
    Co PIs: Ruobing Dong, Physics and Astronomy and Kwang Moo Yi, UBC computer science

And 3 UVic researchers are part of collaborative teams awarded Transformation grants

  • Project title: CANSTOREnergy: Seasonal storage of renewable energy
    Co-Applicant: Christina Hoicka, Geography
  • Project title:Enabling novel cardiac therapies with pluripotent stem cells
    Collaborator: Stephanie Willerth, Mechanical Engineering
  • Project title: Rare Isotopes to Transform Cancer Therapy
