A journey from worker to working artist
The Ring
Brandon Poole spent his twenties as a carpenter and electrician, hitchhiking across Canada, living on a sailboat. And the classes he did take—philosophy, photo journalism—didn't lead to any specific path. It wasn't until he decided to shoot a series of photos in downtown Vancouver's back alleys that he had his academic epiphany.

In 2011, Vikes announced that a track runner from St. Albert, Alberta, had committed to run for the cross country and track program at UVic. Little did they know then that it would be the start of one of the most prolific athletic careers in UVic history and bring a key contributor to student life to campus.
