Passing of renowned artist TEMOSEṈŦET — Dr. Charles Elliott

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of internationally renowned artist TEMOSEṈŦET – Dr. Charles Elliott of the Tsartlip First Nation.

During a career that spanned five decades, he was dedicated to the revitalization and growth of Coast Salish artistic styles and traditions, which were in danger of being lost. A visionary artist, he produced a significant body of artistic work, including paintings, prints, wood carvings and sculptures, that are housed in collections around the world.

TEMOSEṈŦET was a great friend of the university. His artwork is installed around the campus and is exemplified by the house posts that welcome people into the ceremonial hall of the First Peoples House. His prints form an important part of the Legacy Gallery collection and he generously designed multiple logos for academic programs and offices.

Notably, TEMOSEṈŦET was inducted into the Order of British Columbia (OBC) in 2005 and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2013. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from UVic in 2022.

While primarily self-taught in Coast Salish practices, TEMOSEṈŦET inspired and mentored countless young artists and apprentices. He touched the lives of many, sharing his knowledge widely with individuals, classroom groups, educational institutions and organizations.

His loss will be felt deeply across our campus, in the local communities and throughout the art world. His contributions will continue to influence and inspire for many years to come.

The UVic flag will be flown at half mast in honour of TEMOSEṈŦET on Thursday, February 2, 2023. On behalf of the entire UVic community, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
