Tree removal along Ring Road
Tree removal is taking place near the Fraser building on McGill Road between early November and mid-December in preparation for the construction of the National Centre for Indigenous Laws (NCIL) and the expansion of bike lanes.
The NCIL project supports UVic’s goal of being a global leader in creating better opportunities for Indigenous students and entering respectful educational and research partnerships with Indigenous communities.
It directly responds to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #50 to fund the establishment of Indigenous law institutes for the development, use and understanding of Indigenous laws and access to justice in Canada.
Ecological restoration
The university is committed to protecting and managing the ecological diversity of the natural areas on campus. Replacing trees that are removed as part of any project on campus is a priority and built into project plans.
All trees being cut are within the footprint of the new NCIL building or cycling path and are not able to be retained. The project will include new tree planting and landscaping restoration with Indigenous plantings. Healthy bylaw-protected trees will be replaced at a 3:1 ratio, exceeding the District of Saanich’s requirements for tree replacement.
Expanding the bike lane network
The NCIL project will also include a new separated bi-directional cycling pathway along McGill Road in front of the building as part of the implementation of the university’s Campus Cycling Plan.
The McGill Road bike lane upgrades support UVic’s goals around sustainability and active transportation infrastructure and the use of sustainable modes of travel. Active transportation infrastructure helps UVic to meet the objectives of our new Climate and Sustainability Action Plan–including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality.
