Backgrounder: Awards for Indigenous language revitalization
About UVic Indigenous Language Revitalization Awards
Starting Fall 2024, Indigenous Language Revitalization Awards are given to Indigenous students from nine local First Nations who are entering or continuing specific Indigenous language programs at UVic. The award covers tuition and mandatory fees required for the completion of the student’s program of study. No application is necessary; Etalew̓txʷ | ÁTOL,ÁUTW̱, the Office of Vice-President Indigenous (OVPI) recommends new and/or continuing students for the awards.
Award criteria
Students from the following First Nations are eligible: Songhees, Esquimalt, Tsartlip, Pauquachin, Tseycum, Tsawout, Sci’anew, T’Sou-ke and Malahat.
Eligible programs of study include:
- Certificate in Indigenous Language Proficiency
- Certificate in Indigenous Language Revitalization
- Diploma in Indigenous Language Revitalization
- Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization
- Bachelor of Arts in Indigenous Language Proficiency
- Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Language Revitalization
- Master of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization
- Master of Arts in Indigenous Language Revitalization
About Etalew̓txʷ | ÁTOL,ÁUTW̱ | The Office of the Vice-President Indigenous
Etalew̓txʷ | ÁTOL,ÁUTW̱ | Centre of respect for the rights of one another and all beings, the Office of the Vice-President Indigenous (OVPI) provides guidance and oversight of UVic’s Indigenous portfolio, which includes student support services and programming, policy, Indigenous initiatives and procedural developments, and the implementation of the Indigenous Plan. Rooted in this teaching ʔetalnəwəl | ÁTOL,NEUEL | Respecting the rights of one another and being in right relationships with all things, and honouring the laws and protocols of the local Nations, the OVPI works closely with local Indigenous communities, including the Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ Nations; the leadership of First Nations, Métis, Inuit and urban Indigenous organizations; Elders and Knowledge Keepers; and Indigenous faculty, staff and student representatives.

Xʷkʷənəŋistəl | W̱ȻENEṈISTEL | Helping to move each other forward: UVic’s Indigenous Plan 2023 was launched in September of 2023. With local Indigenous teachings and Lək̓ʷəŋən and SENĆOŦEN language woven throughout, the plan proposes a fundamental rethinking of the institution’s approach to learning and work. Alongside the Distinctly UVic strategic plan, both envision a future where Indigenous ways of knowing, being and learning are embedded into UVic’s programs, systems and organizational structure.
