Experts on proposed new Canadian drinking guidelines

The following University of Victoria experts are available to media to discuss the updated Canadian Low Risk Alcohol Drinking Guidelines, developed by the Canadian Centre of Substance Use and Addiction.

These researchers with UVic’s Canadian Institute on Substance Research (CISUR), served on the expert advisory panels tasked with updating the guidelines. Tim Stockwell is the author of the explainer, Canada’s low-risk alcohol use guidelines have been slashed to 6 drinks per week. Here’s why, published today in The Conversation Canada.

Tim Stockwell (CISUR, Dept. of Psychology) is a CISUR scientist who served on the guidelines’ Knowledge Mobilization Expert Panel. He was a member of the expert advisory panel that developed Canada’s initial low-risk drinking guidelines in 2011 and is an internationally recognized expert on policies to prevent alcohol-related harms. Dr. Tim Naimi (CISUR, School of Public Health and Social Policy) is CISUR’s director and served on the guidelines’ Mental Health and Social Effects Expert Panel. He is a physician and alcohol epidemiologist whose research interests mostly lie in substance-use epidemiology, particularly binge drinking and the health effects of moderate drinking, with a focus on prevention and effective public policies for reducing substance-use-related problems. Adam Sherk (CISUR) is a CISUR scientist who served on the guidelines’ Physical Health Expert Panel. His research focuses on substance use epidemiology and policy research. He has developed techniques for estimating alcohol harms used by the World Health Organization, and has contributed to national alcohol harms monitoring systems in Canada, Australia, the US and New Zealand.
