Expert on impacts of situation in Turkey

The following University of Victoria faculty member is available to media to discuss the aftermath of the attempted coup in Turkey.

Martin Bunton (Dept. of History / Centre for Global Studies) is a historian and the current interim director of UVic’s Centre for Global Studies. He is an expert in the field of modern Middle Eastern history and can provide perspective on President Erdogan’s efforts over the past five to 10 years to consolidate power even after winning successive democratic elections. He can also speak to the ramifications throughout the Arab world: “This situation has huge implications for the civil war in Syria and the war against ISIS,” says Bunton. “It’s going to risk destabilizing the region even more.” (He is available today and tomorrow, and during regular business hours next week until July 27.)
