This week: UVic Fall Convocation

The University of Victoria’s Fall Convocation ceremonies, marking the successful completion of studies for 1,379 graduating students, will be held Wednesday and Thursday (at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. each day) in the University Centre Farquhar Auditorium.

Among the outstanding members of the graduating class who are available to talk to the media are:

•    An engineering grad who built a race car as part of a student team, had a co-op work term at Tesla, and now works on self-driving vehicle prototypes with Bosch.
•    A history grad who helped the Stó:lō community on a collaborative digital map-making project.
•    One of the graduates of the new Indigenous communities counselling psychology program.

Announced earlier, the university will grant honorary degrees to four exceptional individuals:

Lynn Conway (honorary doctor of engineering, Nov. 9 at 10 a.m.) is a computer scientist and engineer who helped to pioneer modern information technology and is a leading advocate for transgender rights.

Darren Entwistle (honorary doctor of laws, Nov. 9 at 2:30 p.m.) is a Canadian telecommunications industry leader whose entrepreneurial spirit is matched by his commitment to community involvement and corporate social responsibility.

Simon Whitfield (honorary doctor of laws, Nov. 10 at 10 a.m.) is a four-time Olympic triathlete who reached the pinnacle of his sport and became a role model and mentor, particularly for young people.

Mike Harcourt (honorary doctor of laws, Nov. 10 at 2:30 p.m.) is a champion for sustainability and, largely due to personal circumstances, for people living with physical disabilities.

Each ceremony can be seen via live webcast. Photos and highlights can be shared using #uvic2016.
